Developing Resilience Skills - Upper School

Developing resilience is a lifelong skill that we believe is vital for all children and adults. Our teachers are really committed to helping the children develop their resilience skills and have undertaken specific training to aid them in their delivery on the extra lessons and is therefore taught as part of our year 5 curriculum

There are 6 lessons that will be taught to the children which talk them through these main 4 skills:

• Harnessing emotions

• Noticing the gremlins

• Reframing the gremlins

• Keeping perspective

The lessons aim to teach the following competencies:

What will the Lessons Involve?

Resilience and harnessing positive emotions
Children discuss not jumping to conclusions over emotions because we express them in different ways. It is always better to ask rather than assume.

Connecting the brain, emotions and thoughts
The class discuss and work through some questions about how the brain works and its 3 parts.

Introducing the 'gremlin beliefs'
Children will learn about what we call unhelpful beliefs (gremlin beliefs).

Optimism & evidence
Children begin to come up with questions that question gremlin beliefs to check the accuracy of their thinking.

WoBbLe
Children recap last lesson reinforcing that we can control how we feel and behave by questioning gremlin beliefs to gain evidence. Children take part in a gratitude circle.

Children will gain an understanding that when we are uncertain about something or somebody, we can assume the worst is going to happen and the 'catastrophising gremlin belief' takes control. Controlling these anxious thoughts before they take over is a crucial skill.

Resilience planning
Children discuss how they can use their resilience skills to be flexible and not get stuck into fixed, inaccurate thinking. Children create a resilience mind map. Mapping out and including all the things that they are going to do and techniques that will work for them.

The Red Box

Almond Hill has joined the Red Box Project, a national community organisation committed to giving young people access to fre menstrual products in schools.

As a result, we now have a selection of menstrual products available for students to access during school hours. This includes a range of pads in all absorbencies, night pads (and tampons). It also contains clean underwear, should it be needed. The box is stocked from donations from our local community, who support the project and its aims.

Any student who needs to receive items from the box, whether it's one item to get them through the day or several packs to ensure they're able to attend school throughout their period, will be able to access it via their teacher. Students should ask for the Red Box where they will be able to take away whatever they need.

We will be speaking to students about the box but you may also want to take this opportunity to talk to your children about their needs and how the box might be able to help them.

If you have any further questions, or would like to know more about the Red Box Project, you can email Gerry The Red Box Coordinator for Stevenage at;
theredboxprojectstevenage@gmail.com. There is also a Facebook page of the same name, Gofundme page and Twitter @RedStevenage

It was great to have her there she was extremely knowledgeable. She introduced her service and described the range of needs that they would be able to help with. She also told us about lots of online groups dealing with various issues such as sleep problems, fear of being sick etc. that parents can access to support their children. If you think your child has issues related to anxiety then they would be happy for you to self-refer. They use a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach.

We even got to try some fruit and vegetables as we learnt that our tastes change as we grow up - we might like things now that we didn't used to like! We got active doing star jumps and high knees whilst learning about the positive impact that movement and exercise have on our wellbeing. We also spent some time thinking about our body image including listing things that we like about our bodies and learning that we shouldn't compare ourselves to others. Lastly, we were reminded to drink 2 litres of water a day and were very grateful to receive a free water bottle to help us reach our goal!

Remember - catching a bus or train are also great ways to travel alongside others. We challenge YOU to make an active journey every day of the May holidays! Record your active journeys however you like – you could create a diary, make a poster or take photographs to share with us in school!

This week for Healthy Eating Week, we have been comparing foods and discussing how/when we can make healthier choices. During the half term, we would like Year 3 and 4 to name as many different fruits and vegetables as you can using the letters of the alphabet. You can present in a way of your choice. Children in Year 5 and 6 can do this too OR you can choose to create a glossary of any key words you have learnt this week and write a sentence for each.

Every term, we try to do something to promote kindness in our school, community and nationally. Our kindness ambassadors would love you to write poem about kindness that the school could learn in the last half term. If you see yourself as a budding poet, this could be the task for you!

We are so lucky at Almond Hill to have lovely school grounds and outdoor spaces to enjoy. We have the field, playgrounds and the jungle gym for playing games but we want to use the Quad to create a space where you can relax and feel calm. We need your help! Your home learning project is to design a relaxation space for all children to enjoy!

We have selected Kindness Ambassadors from each class and we meet to discuss ideas and the Kindness initiatives that we are going to implement in class, the wider school, local and national community. Every half term, the Year 6 Ambassadors attend a Zoom call with the other schools involved nationally to brainstorm ideas and celebrate achievements. We now have a 'Kindness Challenge of the week' which is selected in Monday morning assembly. This week's Kindness Challenge has been 'Cheer someone on when they do well and be happy for them' and we have seen lots of children supporting and encouraging their peers to do their best.

The children were talked through DR ABCD: D-danger R- response A- airway B- breathing C- CPR / circulation D- defibrillator. The children had a go at putting each other in the recovery position and then had a go at trying some CPR on some life-like dummies. There were lots of sore hands afterwards but what an amazing skill to learn. They then learnt about how defibrillators are used and how they can increase chances of survival from 10% to 70%!

The Mayor, Jim Brown, was in attendance as well as many other local KS1, KS2 and Secondary schools. The subject of this meeting was to discuss Mental Health support in our schools and the children had the opportunity to share all of the things we do in our school and community to support mental health and well-being. Our representatives were very brave (and well behaved!) and took turns, using microphones to speak to the other attendees. They shared so many great initiatives that we have in place such as Peer Mediators, our school dog, Miya, Kindness Ambassadors and Celebration Assemblies and they took notes on the initiatives they liked from the other schools. Miss Andrews and myself (Mrs Bond), were so proud of how well Arthur, Lois and Emilia represented our Almond Hill community. They have been so inspired by the experience, that they have requested an assembly to feedback about the morning and to share their ideas with the rest of the school. Well done to them for keeping such an important subject in the forefront of our minds.

We learnt about the different things we can do physically to help such as: eating a balanced diet (we even got to try some fruit!); doing exercises (we tried some out all together) and having a positive body image. We all enjoyed the session and we learnt something new. We were also very lucky because at the end we were given a water bottle (so that we can stay hydrated) and a stress ball! Photos

This year's theme was 'Choose Respect' which fits in perfectly with our school value for November - Respect! We watched a lesson by the BBC and the Anti-Bullying alliance which helped us learn about playing fairly, working together, respecting one another and how to deal with conflict. Lots of us spent Autumn 1 thinking about friendships and relationships so we enjoyed sharing and furthering what we had learnt so far.

Here are some comments from Y3 about what they learnt in their lesson:
"If someone is unkind to you tell the teacher or a grown up and don't be unkind back"- Ruby
"Bullying is not acceptable we should never do it, if you get in an argument take a minute out and then come back and say sorry"- Oliver

The sessions focused on how being active can support physical and mental wellbeing. The children learnt about the science behind exercise and positive mental health, learn even more about resilience (which built on our PSHE lessons) and even had a go at some active breaks and teamwork games. Doug visits many different schools and said how impressed he was with the year 5's engagement and behaviour- well done everyone and a massive thank you to Doug!

Year 3 enjoyed their trip to the cinema to see Garfield. All of the children were fantastic representatives for the school; they were very well behaved and polite. The children enjoyed the film and there was lots of excited chatter about it on the walk back. This was the first trip to the cinema for some of the children and we are thrilled that they had such a good time. The staff would like to thank the brilliant parent helpers who volunteered to come with us. Your support is appreciated by us all. Thank you to Miss Simmons for organising the tickets! What a fab trip!

All of the children had a great time; they were polite, well-behaved and good representatives for our school. Historically, we have always expected children to eat a healthy snack (or choose this from their packed lunch) at break - ideally fruit or vegetables to ensure this important part of a balanced diet is not left out each day. This forms part of our commitment to promoting health overall including sleep and exercise. We are aware we have not always reminded parents of this expectation regularly enough so were pleased when children asked us to address this.
