    Dear Parents/Carers,

Another busy week has come to an end, with lots happening across the school community. We enjoyed a netball match, welcomed families to our SEND/Pastoral coffee morning and shared a lovely 3C parent lunch. We have also had school photos and flu vaccinations taking place, so it has certainly been a full and varied week.

This morning, our Year 6 children left for their residential to Grafham Water. This is a rite of passage for Year 6 at Almond Hill, and I know they are looking forward to spending time together, trying new activities and making lasting memories. We wish them a safe and enjoyable trip and look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return.

Next week will be slightly quieter as we get ready for the end of the first half term. We have the last of our Year 3 parent lunches, followed by our pre-loved book sale. The book sale will be a great opportunity for children to choose something new to read while giving pre-loved books another life.

    Have a good weekend.

A Big Thank You for Supporting Our Mini Marathon

A huge thank you to all our families for supporting our mini marathon. We have been completely overwhelmed by your generosity, encouragement and enthusiasm. Thanks to your support, we have helped Mrs Geer raise more than £4,000 for the NSPCC, which is a fantastic achievement. She is running the London Marathon next year for the NSPCC, so this event was a meaningful way for our school community to support the charity and her fundraising efforts.

The children showed great determination as they took part and it was lovely to see families cheering them on. Your donations and kind messages made the event particularly special for everyone involved.

The mini marathon was so popular that it will now be reinstated as a yearly event. In future, it will help to raise money for the school, supporting activities and opportunities for our children. Thank you once again for helping to make the day such a success.

    Year 3 Parent Lunch

A reminder of the dates for the Year 3 parent lunches.  Lunch will be served at 12.20pm on separate days:

    Dear Parents/Carers,

What a busy and positive week we have had at school!

On Wednesday, we held our first Year 3 parent lunch, giving families the chance to try out the meals from HCL. It was lovely to welcome parents into school and share lunchtime together. We also had parents’ evening on Thursday, and we would value your feedback on the way we have organised it this year, so please do let us know what you think on next week’s newsletter.

Year 5 and 6 took part in an indoor rowing event this week, showing great determination and team spirit. We finished the week with the Marathon, helping Mrs Geer to raise money for the NSPCC. Thank you to everyone who supported this important fundraising event.

Good luck to our football team, who are playing their first tournament this evening. We look forward to hearing how you got on!

    Looking ahead to next week

We have another busy and exciting week planned. Pupils will take part in a Table Tennis competition and a Netball match, giving them opportunities to develop their skills, teamwork and confidence. We will also be hosting our SEND and Pastoral Coffee Morning, as well as welcoming families to the 3C parent lunch.

Individual and sibling photos will also take place on Thursday next week. Year 6, please remember that your individual photographs will be used for the yearbook.

We are particularly excited about the Year 6 residential to Grafham. This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to enjoy new experiences, challenge themselves, strengthen friendships and create lasting memories together. We hope they have an amazing time!

    Have a good weekend.

    Common SEN (Mis)Interventions

At our recent Open Evenings, I spoke about the increasing demand for SEND interventions in schools. As a school, we use both evidence from our own practice and findings from educational research to ensure that our limited resources are directed where they will have the greatest impact on children's outcomes.

For parents who are interested in learning more about this approach, I have included below a report entitled ‘Common SEN (Mis)Interventions’. The report explores a range of commonly used interventions, highlighting which approaches are supported by evidence and which may be less effective than is often assumed.

Importantly, this is an easy-to-read report written for parents and educators, rather than an academic paper. It avoids educational jargon and presents the key findings in a clear and accessible way, making it a useful resource for anyone interested in understanding how schools can best support children with SEND.

I hope you find it both informative and thought-provoking.

    Anti Bullying Policy Review

Over the coming weeks, governors and staff will be reviewing our Anti-Bullying Policy. We want to ensure that the policy remains relevant, up to date and reflective of the needs of our school community. To help us achieve this, we would greatly appreciate feedback from all stakeholders.

Teachers have already been discussing this topic at staff meetings and we would now like to hear from children, parents and carers. Teachers will be having conversations with children and your views will help us to identify what is working well and whether there are any areas that could be improved.

Please take a few minutes to read the attached policy and share your thoughts using the comments section below.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute to this important review. Your feedback will help us ensure that our school continues to be a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all children.

Stevenage Community Trust – Christmas Gift Cards

The Stevenage Community Trust runs an annual Christmas Gift Card Scheme, providing £200 in gift cards to support struggling families and children in need across Stevenage and the surrounding villages.  Families are unable to self-refer for this support, as all applications must be submitted by a professional on their behalf.

If you feel this scheme could help ease financial pressures over the Christmas period and support with the cost of gifts or food for your children, please contact Mrs Wright in the strictest confidence: wrighth@almondhill.herts.sch.uk

Applications must be submitted by 31st October. To allow sufficient time for completion before the half-term break, please contact Mrs Wright no later than 19th October.

    Heating Grants Available This Winter

As the colder months approach, families who are experiencing financial hardship may be able to access support with their energy costs through a Heating Grant. Applications are open from 1st October to 31st March. The scheme is available to people on a low income, including those in employment, receiving state benefits, or receiving a pension. Please note that you do not need to be receiving benefits to be considered for support.

Successful applicants will receive a £300 grant, which will be paid directly to their energy provider to help with heating costs during the winter months.

If you think you may be eligible, we encourage you to explore this opportunity and contact Mrs Wright in the strictest confidence: wrighth@almondhill.herts.sch.uk who can apply on your behalf.

    Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been another good week in school, with plenty of opportunities for our pupils to learn, take part and enjoy time together. We held another road safety session for Year 5, helping the children to think carefully about staying safe when travelling to and from school. These sessions are always a useful reminder of the choices we can make to keep ourselves and others safe.

Some Year 6 children also enjoyed a golf event this week. It was lovely to see pupils getting involved, trying something new and supporting one another. Events such as these offer a valuable chance to develop confidence, teamwork and resilience beyond the classroom.

Next week promises to be just as busy. We are looking forward to our first Year 3 parent lunch, which will be a special opportunity for parents and children to share lunch together in school. We also have a rowing event and Parents’ Evening taking place, so there will be plenty happening throughout the week.

We will finish the week with the Almond Hill Marathon. We are excited to see our pupils taking part, encouraging each other and celebrating their achievements. Please read below for some important information about the marathon. We look forward to seeing many of you during the week.

    Have a good weekend.

    Almond Hill Marathon

Following some practice runs, we have made a small change to the schedule to help ensure the event runs safely and smoothly.

    • Years 3 and 4 will complete their marathon at 2:00pm.
    • Years 5 and 6 will complete their marathon at 2:30pm.

If your child is in Year 3 or Year 4, you will be able to collect them directly from their classroom door once they have finished their marathon, unless you are staying to support a child taking part in the Upper School event.

The Year 5 and Year 6 marathon will finish just before the end of the school day, so home-time collection arrangements will remain as normal.

Today, children will be bringing home a sponsorship pledge form. Please take a few moments to complete this with your child and return it to school before the marathon on Friday. During the event, teachers will record the number of laps each child completes. Once the marathon is finished, class teachers will add the total number of laps to your child's sponsorship form so that you know how much to donate.  Please make all donations via the GoFundMe link, as we are unable to accept cash payments.

To add a little extra excitement, the class who run the most laps in both the Lower School and Upper School will receive medals.

All children should wear their PE kit to school on this day.

Parents and carers are very welcome to join in (and actively encouraged to!) and we can't wait to see everyone taking part and giving it their best effort.

    Drop off Zone – Safety

Please can we ask all parents and carers to ensure that children do not walk across the drop-off zone and instead use the designated pathways. We would also appreciate adults modelling this behaviour wherever possible. The drop-off and collection area is particularly busy and we have experienced near misses that could easily have been avoided by using the paths provided

    Swimming Lessons

The pop-up pool will be arriving during the October half-term break, ready for swimming lessons to begin in November. We are looking forward to providing this exciting opportunity for our children.

There are still a number of outstanding consent forms. Please log in to Arbor and check the ‘Notices’ section to ensure your child's consent has been completed and is up to date. We will also be contacting families of children in Year 4, 5 and 6 directly where consent is still required to see if any barriers can be addressed or request certificates where this are outstanding. Thank you for your support in helping us ensure all children are able to take part in this valuable experience.

    Online Appointments

If you choose an online meeting, please follow the link below for a guide on using the system. Please read this carefully as it tells you how to check that your technology will work correctly for the meeting. You will be sent a link for the meeting and you will need to ensure you are prompt to start. The meetings follow back to back so your time cannot be adjusted. The meetings will be timed to 9 minutes and will cut out after this time. There will be a clock on screen as an indicator for both you and the teacher that the meeting is coming to an end.

    https://support.parentseveningsystem.co.uk/article/801-video-parents-how-to-attend-appointments-over-video-call

We must ask parents to comply with our remote learning policy to ensure safeguarding in the meetings. In attending the meeting, parents must be appropriately dressed, they should be in a neutral, quiet, downstairs area of the home. Parents should be aware of any backgrounds that could be seen by teachers - e.g. personal photographs of family and background noise.

All meetings are subject to technology working and we ask you to be supportive if things do not go quite to plan. Please be assured that if there is a technical hitch at the time of the meeting then your child’s teacher will contact you to rearrange.

Clubs during the week commencing 5th October

As previously confirmed, there will be no DT club, Running club, Advanced Dance with Dani or Racket sports club. All other clubs (including Premier Wraparound Care) will run as normal.

Pedestrian gates will open at 3.10pm on the day of parents' evening.

    Dear Parents/Carers,

It was wonderful to see so many families attending our Parent Information Meetings this week. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us. We appreciate that it is not always possible for all parents and carers to attend so we will be sending out the PowerPoint presentations shared during the meetings later today to ensure everyone has access to the information discussed.

Our school is taking part in the Modeshift STARS initiative, a national programme that helps schools encourage safe, active and sustainable travel. The scheme supports schools in promoting walking, cycling, scooting and the use of public transport as alternatives to car journeys.

Over the past two weeks, children in Years 3 and 4 have taken part in a range of road safety awareness sessions. These have been engaging, informative and thoroughly enjoyed by the children. They have learned valuable skills to help them stay safe when travelling, and I must admit, I have learned a few things too! It has been fantastic to see the children's enthusiasm and growing awareness of how to travel safely and responsibly. Year 5 will be having theirs next week.

    Have a good weekend.

    Secondary School Applications

Please remember to apply for your child's secondary or upper school place for September 2027. The online application system is now open.

Please see the attached leaflet for details of open events. Further information is available at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/admissions.

Saturday 31 October 2026 - Closing date for applications (online and paper).

It is really important your home address is correct on Arbor and is the same address you use to apply for your child’s secondary school place. The admissions team do check with school and it can hold up your application.

    Attendance Matters

Today, all families will receive a letter regarding attendance. The letter contains important information about different types of absence, attendance expectations, and guidance from Hertfordshire's Code of Conduct regarding penalty notices and term-time holidays.

If your child has strong attendance and is currently attending school above 96%, you may feel that much of this information is not directly relevant to you. However, we would encourage all families to take a few moments to read the letter so that everyone is aware of the current guidance and procedures.

For families whose child's attendance is below the national average, we would particularly urge you to read the information carefully, as it outlines the support available and the importance of ensuring children attend school regularly wherever possible.

We will also be contacting families of children in Year 4, 5 and 6 directly where consent is still required.

Thank you for your support in helping us ensure all children are able to take part in this valuable experience.

    Parents’ Evening

Our Parents’ Evening (PTI’s) for the whole school will be held on Thursday 8th October 2026, with both online and in-person appointments available.  All online appointments will take place in a ‘block’ at the start (9 appointments) beginning at 1.30pm.  Following the end of the school day, our in-person appointments will begin at 4.00pm.  The evening will finish at 7.30pm.  Appointment lengths are timed and teachers will need to keep to these strict timings.

Appointments can be made from 6.00pm today and the booking system will close on Wednesday 30th September at 4.00pm.  Should you wish to make any changes after this date, please contact the school office.  If the class has a shared teacher, your appointment will be with one or both of the teachers.  Please be mindful that appointments do fill up quickly.  If you have a strong desire for a particular time or type of meeting, I would urge you to secure your appointment early.

Please visit https://almondhill.parentseveningsystem.co.uk to book your appointment. A short guide on how to add appointments is available on the school website. Please log in with the following information: your child’s first name, surname and date of birth. It is vital that you use the same information held by the school as any discrepancies will prevent you from accessing the system.  Please log into the parent portal on Arbor to double check the information we hold for you and your child to ensure you are inputting the correct information.

Signing up for Events – Deadlines and Consent

We work really hard to take part in so many events and we try to ensure that all children have the opportunity to participate (if they would like to). When you are sent an invitation for your child, it will provide information about the event, date, times, location and a deadline by which we require your consent. If the deadline passes without consent or communication, the place will be offered to another child.  Deadlines are often quite short and are often beyond our control, as the notice we receive from organisers can be limited.

Please check with your child that they would like to take part before signing them up. If they do not wish to attend, that is absolutely fine, but please ensure you let us know by replying to the invitation email. These events are usually planned by Stevenage Sporting Futures and often have minimum and maximum participation requirements that we must meet in order to attend.

We appreciate that families lead busy lives and that emails can sometimes be overlooked. However, all events require a risk assessment so it is important that consent is provided and any required information is returned by the deadline so that the risk assessments can be completed and shared with staff in good time before the event. We understand how disappointing it can be for children to miss out however we are unlikely to be able to accommodate late responses once places have been allocated and event paperwork has been finalised.

    Year 3 Parent Lunch

    Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been a busy and productive week across the school, with lots of exciting learning opportunities taking place. Our Year 4 pupils have taken part in pedestrian skills workshops, which have been both highly engaging and informative. The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have gained valuable knowledge to help them stay safe when out and about.

Meanwhile, our Year 6 pupils are beginning to settle into their new roles and responsibilities within the school. From Headteacher's Assistants to Lunch Leaders, they have embraced these opportunities with enthusiasm and maturity, demonstrating excellent leadership qualities and setting a fantastic example for our younger pupils. Look out for an update on pupil leadership as the term progresses.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming parents and carers to our upcoming information meetings next week. While we will share key information with those who are unable to attend, these sessions are always most effective when delivered in person, providing an opportunity to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the year ahead.

Attendance has not been particularly high since our return to school. We understand that children do become ill; however, wherever possible, children should be in school. Please note that teachers are unable to provide work for children who miss learning due to absence from school. All families will receive a letter regarding attendance next week.

    Have a good weekend.

    Parent Information Meetings – Reminder

We believe that in order for children to fully benefit from their experiences at school—both in learning and in wider opportunities—it is vital that parents and carers are kept fully informed about what is happening and why.

For this reason, we strongly encourage you to attend our Year Group Parent Information Meetings. At these meetings, teachers will share important information about exciting school events, curriculum plans (long and medium-term), and how you can support your child at home. We will also be discussing swimming, school trips, The Climb, and our ‘Let Grow’ initiative and how it has been incorporated into our revised values.

For Year 6 families, we will also provide details about Grafham and SATs.

The meetings will be held in the school hall, which can be accessed via the hall doors through the quadrant after pick up. The meetings will begin once teachers have finished releasing children at the end of the school day, which is likely to be around 3:30pm. The finish time is flexible, as teachers will be sharing a presentation and families will have the opportunity to ask questions. We anticipate that the meetings will last no longer than one hour. Children and siblings are welcome to attend and a creche will be available for those who wish to use it. This will be clearly signposted from the hall.

    Dear Families,

Well done everyone for settling into the routines of your new year group during our first full week back at school!

We will also be discussing swimming, school trips, The Climb, and our new ‘Let Grow’ initiative.

    Have a good weekend.

    Secondary School Applications

Please remember to apply for your child's secondary or upper school place for September 2027. The online application system is now open.

Please see the leaflet below for details of open events. Further information is available at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/admissions.

Saturday 31 October 2026 - Closing date for applications (online and paper).

Changes to Staffing in 3B and 4W

I am sure families will be as delighted as I am at the wonderful news that both Mrs Bonfield and Mrs Waldrom are pregnant.

While this is truly happy news, we understand that change can sometimes feel unsettling for some children. I am therefore pleased to let you know that Mrs Geer will be increasing her hours to provide the majority of the teaching in 3B.

We have also secured a new teacher to support in 4W, who will join us after half term. This will allow for an extended handover period to ensure a smooth transition for both staff and pupils.

    Maths Home Learning

This year for home learning we would like the children to spend 20 minutes per week on TTRockstars but more specifically on the 'Garage' game. This option is all about increasing times table fluency and speed and your child making progress against their own 'Heatmap'. As most parents will be aware, heatmaps are shared with them at Parents’ Evening and are an indication of which times tables children are more or less confident with. Class teachers will check that children have spent time on TTRS and hopefully, over time, will see their heatmaps 'go green'.

We understand that for families of children in Year 3, TTRockstars may be completely new. We will explain how TTRockstars works and what the heat maps are at our parent information meetings and subsequently via the newsletter and Seesaw.

To raise the standards of times tables recall and ultimately improve maths fluency, we will be holding half termly TTRS battles in year groups. These will be fully celebrated with a range of certificates, at the end of each half term, including battle and gone green certificates plus Rock star status accolades and badges. We trust that as parents you will support your children in working hard to improve this vital maths skill. Please come to the parent meetings to learn more!

    Parent Forum

Miss Simmons runs our Parent Forum and organises termly meetings where parents and school leaders come together to discuss an agenda that is jointly shaped by the leadership team and parent volunteers.

Towards the end of last year, we noticed a decline in attendance at these meetings. We know that parents' time is valuable but your input is incredibly important. Every one of you is an expert in what it is like to be a parent at our school and your perspective helps to shape the decisions we make and the direction we take as a school.

The Parent Forum has played a key role in many of the positive changes we have made over recent years and we would love to hear from as many parents as possible.

With that in mind, we would like to ask how you would prefer to get involved. We are happy to work in whatever way best suits the majority of parents so that we can gather the widest range of views and feedback.

Help Us Refresh Our School Library

At Almond Hill, we are passionate about encouraging children to read because they want to, not just because they have to. Creating a real love of reading is something we value deeply.  As part of this, we’ve been talking with the children about our school library and their feedback has been clear - they would love to see some new and exciting books!

This is where we’d really appreciate your support. We know how incredibly generous our families have been in the past, particularly when helping to develop areas such as our relaxation spaces. We have worked with the children to compile a wishlist of books they would love to see in our library. If you are able to, we would be very grateful if you could consider purchasing a book from the list to donate to the school. We were touched by the number of people who purchased from our wishlist last year and it really has made a difference to our libraries.

Some families may even wish to mark a special occasion, such as their child’s birthday, by gifting a book creating a lasting contribution that can be enjoyed by many children for years to come.

Changes to Free School Meal Entitlement

From September 2026, all families receiving Universal Credit will be eligible for Free School Meals. As a result, a new two-tier Free School Meal status has been introduced:

    Targeted Free School Meals

This applies to families whose annual household income (including Universal Credit) is £7,400 or less. Children with this status will qualify for Free School Meals, and schools will also receive Pupil Premium funding and other associated benefits.

    Expanded Free School Meals

This applies to families who receive Universal Credit and have an annual household income of more than £7,400. Previously, these families would not have qualified for Free School Meals. Under the new arrangements, children with this status will be entitled to a Free School Meal; however, they will not attract Pupil Premium funding or other associated benefits.

If you believe that you should qualify for Free School Meal, please apply by visiting Free school meals and other benefits | Hertfordshire County Council for a quick 5 minute check.

    Please Bring Coats to School

As is typical of this time of year, the weather has been a bit unpredictable. One minute there is glorious sunshine and the next, the heavens open! We try to get the children outside as often as possible – even in the rain so please can we ask that children are bringing a rain coat to school (even if the weather is looking promising!)

    Dear Parents/Carers,

A big welcome back to you all and I hope you enjoyed the summer holidays. I trust our new families in Year 3 and across the school are settling in well and we wish you a warm welcome to our school.

Please take the time to read our newsletter as this is our main method of sharing information with you at home. For those of you who don’t know, the newsletter is on our website and is shared with families via email on a Friday afternoon. We often get emails/phone calls requesting information that has been on our newsletter. After feedback from you, we limited the amount of emails that were sent to parents and therefore much more information has been added to our newsletters which remains a more reliable source of information (as opposed to WhatsApp groups so I am told ðŸ˜Š).

    Have a good weekend.

    Values

At the end of the summer term, we asked parents, families and staff for their feedback and comments on our aims and values. Using this feedback we have changed the monthly values to the following:

    September Aspiration
    October Honesty
    November Respect
    December Generosity
    January Gratitude
    February  Courage
    March Kindness
    April Positivity
    May Empathy
    June Acceptance
    July Responsibility
    August  Service

    Attendance

Please be reminded, gates close at 8.55am  and if you arrive after this time, you will need to come via the main office to be signed in.  This is to ensure the site is secure and it is imperative children don’t ‘squeeze in’ at the last second as they could get missed if their class has left to go to the hall for example.

Parents will receive a letter in the next few weeks reminding them of the expectations and the national regulations with regards to school attendance. I would urge you all to take the time to read the information. With the cost of living crisis and more pressure on families, we continued to see an increase in the number of holidays taken in term time last year. I would like to remind parents that I cannot authorise time off during term time unless for exceptional circumstances. I understand parents may feel that the time off will not affect their child significantly negatively however the overall education of the class is hugely affected if the teacher has to repeatedly catch up those who have missed prior learning.

    Seesaw

We use Seesaw across the school to share and celebrate the children’s work. Parents tell us they love these updates. New parents will receive an invitation to join the app but only once consent has been given. This has been sent to you via the Arbor Parent Portal. Please allow us some time to get this set up. For more information, follow the link below: www.almondhill.herts.sch.uk/Seesaw

    Facebook

For those of you who don’t know, we have a school Facebook page. We already have lots of you following but would love to see many more of you including our new families! Please follow the link to follow our page: https://www.facebook.com/121almondhill

    Other Key Apps

Parents of children who have joined us this term, you will need access to the Arbor Parent Portal. Many of you have already logged in which is fantastic but if you haven’t and need help with this, please contact our office.

    Coming to School/Mobile Phones

School policy allows for children in years 5 and 6 to bring a mobile phone to school for safety reasons if they travel to and from school independently. Mobile phones must be switched off whilst on school premises and not be used during the school day. There is no need for parents to inform the class teacher/office if their child is walking home independently. I would ask that children do not however bring their phones on school trips or after school events. Please can I remind parents, especially those in year 5 and 6, unaccompanied children should not arrive at school before 8.45am. I appreciate some children are keen to get to school but the school grounds are not supervised before this time and accidents do happen.

    Contacting the School

There will be times, as parents, where you need to contact the school and general enquiries can be made via the school office by phone or email. You are also very welcome to email the year group email addresses to contact your child’s year group. Please only use the year group email for NON urgent queries/questions as they are not monitored during the day

    Year3@almondhill.herts.sch.uk
    Year4@almondhill.herts.sch.uk
    Year5@almondhill.herts.sch.uk
    Year6@almondhill.herts.sch.uk

If you have any questions regarding your child, please make an appointment after school to see the class teacher initially as in most cases they will have the most up to date information on your child. If at this point you still feel you would like to speak to someone at our school, please first contact Miss Simmons, our Deputy Head (simmons@almondhill.herts.sch.uk) or if your child has special educational needs or disabilities, Mrs Birchall our SENCo (iep@almondhill.herts.sch.uk). If the issue is of a pastoral nature, Mrs Wright our pastoral lead can be contacted at wrighth@almondhill.herts.sch.uk. The Designated Teacher with overall responsibility for Child Protection is Mrs Fordham, with Mrs Birchall, Mrs Wright, Mrs Barker and Miss Simmons as deputies. The deputies deal with day-to-day safeguarding issues but all cases are shared with the whole safeguarding team. Mrs Fordham can be contacted using the admin email address and will respond accordingly. However, depending on the nature of your email, it may be passed on to a more appropriate member of staff for a response.  Mrs Fordham is often unavailable at short notice and an effective and more efficient response is often achieved by speaking to someone else on the team. That being said, Mrs Fordham will always make the time to speak to parents if all other avenues have been exhausted, the matter is extremely urgent or parents have a specific reason why they believe she is the only person who can deal with the matter.

    Reporting Absences

Now, you can report on the day absence in the following ways:
    by phone (01438 233660 option 1)
by completing the form on our website
by submitting on to the Arbor Parent Portal (How to Guide)

Please do not use the year group emails for this or admin@almondhill.herts.sch.uk. The year group emails are not regularly monitored and there are so many emails coming into admin and with only one person managing this box,  they may be missed. You will still be contacted by the office team to check absence if you have emailed one of these as it may not have been passed on and we have a duty to check children’s attendance.

We also reinstated the online form for requests for time off in term time. If you are requesting time off in term time for holidays, a religious festival or other events, please submit the form on our website. You will also find a form here to inform us of medical appointments.  Please be advised that the government does not consider holidays to be an exceptional circumstance. These are highly unlikely to be authorised and are very likely to incur a fine.

Changes to collection – on the day

We understand that there are times when parents need to arrange for someone else to collect their child, whether at the end of the school day or for transport to and from sporting events or other activities. For safeguarding reasons, it is essential that we are informed of any such changes in advance. We cannot allow a child to be collected by someone who is not their parent or usual carer without prior confirmation from you. Currently, these messages are sometimes shared via phone calls, the main admin email, or year group email accounts. This can occasionally result in information being missed, delayed, or not seen in time. To improve both safeguarding and efficiency, we have introduced a dedicated Change to Collection form on our website. We kindly ask that you complete this form (in the same way you would report a same-day absence) whenever there is a change to your child’s usual collection arrangements. Please also use this form if another parent is collecting your child, including for school events.

We do not use a password system for collection; however, it is essential that you inform us of any changes to collection arrangements, as we will not allow a child to go home with someone unless we have been notified in advance.

    https://www.almondhill.herts.sch.uk/form/?pid=17&form=536

Collection at the end of the School Day

Children in Year 3 and 4 need to be collected by an adult unless we have written permission for children to go home with older siblings. Please confirm this with teaching staff via the year group email. There are no laws about this as such as it relates to the level of the child's competency however we feel that most children in Years 3 and 4 do not have the experience to make safe choices when circumstances are not as they have expected. It is also sometimes not possible for an older sibling to keep a younger sibling safe. Ultimately it is the parents' decision however we are responsible for the safeguarding of the children so will want some dialogue if children younger than Year 5 are not being collected by an adult. As the school has become larger and access routes (both pedestrian and vehicle) have become busier, this becomes increasingly important.

Children in Year 5 and 6 are allowed to leave school independently. Teachers will walk them up to the gate at the end of the school day but will not monitor collection. If your child is due to meet you from school, please ensure they know where they are going. It is also important to remind children to return to school if they find the person who is meeting them is not where they were expecting them to be.

    Drop off Zone

There are almost 350 children arriving and leaving our school every day. In the interests of the safety of all our children, we expect you to observe the parking restrictions when dropping off or collecting your child in a car. Please can you make your child aware that the raised area outside of the school is not a pedestrian crossing.

If you park in the ‘drop off’ zone it must be in one of the marked bays. You may not park on the access roadway around these spaces. Adults who park in one of the allocated parking spaces at the end of the day need to get out of their cars and walk to collect their child. The ‘drop off’ area is for vehicle entrance/exit only NOT for pedestrian use. I am sure like me; you wish to keep our children as safe as possible. I hope the guidelines are clear enough for all parents/carers to follow. If you have any queries or concerns about the use of the drop off, please contact me.

If you are driving to school, please park safely and in line with restrictions. Please also show respect to our neighbours in adjacent roads so their access is not restricted by inconsiderate parking.

Please supervise younger children in and around the school entrances and if you are waiting outside of classrooms. The main gates are automatic. Sometimes younger children are not supervised and are allowed to climb onto the gates and handrails and run around near the vehicle entrance. KEEP CLEAR OF THESE GATES AND ENSURE YOUNG CHILDREN STAY CLOSE TO PARENTS AND ARE PROPERLY SUPERVISED.

Breakfast Club Drop off (either nurture or Premier)
If your child attends breakfast club, please ensure that you walk them to the door. It is not appropriate to let them walk unaccompanied from the main entrance.

    Home Learning

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the home learning feedback survey last term. It has been extremely valuable to hear your views. Based on the feedback received, it was clear that the vast majority of families feel that home learning (or homework) is beneficial. However, many also commented that, although they wanted it to continue, it can sometimes be a source of stress.

Therefore, going forward, home learning will be completed online. The cost of resources has influenced this decision, as rising costs have made the use of paper increasingly expensive. In addition, families commented that completed homework was sometimes forgotten at home or not brought into school. Moving home learning online will make it easier for families to complete, reduce paper usage and support our goal of becoming more sustainable. It will also make home learning more accessible and easier for children to read.

There was also reference in the feedback to issues of equality, with some families feeling that children who do not receive the same level of support at home as others may be at a disadvantage. This is precisely why we ensure that any home learning not completed at home is completed in school. This is not intended as a punishment; rather, it is designed to help reduce gaps in learning and ensure that all children have access to the same opportunities.

The expectation that home learning is completed will remain the same, and teachers will continue to monitor and follow up on this. Where families genuinely do not have access to the internet or suitable technology to complete online learning, appropriate support will be provided in school to ensure that no child is disadvantaged.

The home learning will consist of times tables (using TTRockstars and moving on to Maths.co.uk when times tables are embedded), spelling using Emile and reading. As a school we are really encouraging children to read for pleasure and would ask families to please encourage your child to borrow books from school and read daily – even if just for 10 minutes! We had some new books last year (some of which were kindly donated from our Amazon wishlist) so I am confident children can find some exiting books to read.

There will be further information at the upcoming parent information meetings and would urge parents to attend these. A creche will be available. These meetings will take place in the hall from 3.15pm on the following days:

    Year 3 – Tuesday 22nd September
    Year 4 and 5 – Wednesday 23rd September
    Year 6 – Thursday 24th September

    School Uniform

It is really important that all uniform is clearly labelled to allow lost items to be returned to your child. We encourage children to look through and claim items that belong to them. Although some items are collected, we are still left with lots of uniform. Ordinarily, these items would be recycled but after listening to parents and understanding how successful ‘nearly new’ uniform sales have been locally, we have decided to hold uniform sales once a month at the end of the school day. We have lots of items including t-shirts, cardigans and jumpers and welcome all parents to come to the sales. We are asking for a voluntary donation of 50p which will be given back to the school.

Please support your child to look after their uniform by naming items clearly.

Click here for a reminder of our uniform expecations

    Book Sales

At Almond Hill, we are passionate about fostering a love of reading while supporting our commitment to being an eco-friendly school.

Each month, we hold a pre-loved book sale during the school day, giving children the opportunity to choose from a wonderful selection of donated books for just 50p each.

Children are welcome to bring money to school and browse the exciting range of books available. These sales are always popular, and we are incredibly grateful for the generous donations we receive from our school families.

To help keep our book sales exciting and well stocked, please consider donating any good-quality books that your children have outgrown. Thank you for your continued support.
