Issue 2 - 11th September 2026
Issue number: 2
Date: 11th September 2026
Dear Families,
Well done everyone for settling into the routines of your new year group during our first full week back at school!
We believe that in order for children to fully benefit from their experiences at school—both in learning and in wider opportunities—it is vital that parents and carers are kept fully informed about what is happening and why.
For this reason, we strongly encourage you to attend our Year Group Parent Information Meetings. At these meetings, teachers will share important information about exciting school events, curriculum plans (long and medium-term), and how you can support your child at home. We will also be discussing swimming, school trips, The Climb, and our new ‘Let Grow’ initiative.
For Year 6 families, we will also provide details about Grafham and SATs.
The meetings will be held in the school hall, which can be accessed via the hall doors through the quadrant after pick up. The meetings will begin once teachers have finished releasing children at the end of the school day, which is likely to be around 3:30pm. The finish time is flexible, as teachers will be sharing a presentation and families will have the opportunity to ask questions. We anticipate that the meetings will last no longer than one hour. Children and siblings are welcome to attend and a creche will be available for those who wish to use it. This will be clearly signposted from the hall.
- Tuesday 22nd September – Year 3
- Wednesday 23rd September – Years 4 & 5
- Thursday 24th September – Year 6
Have a good weekend.
Emma Fordham,
Headteacher

Changes to Staffing in 3B and 4W
I am sure families will be as delighted as I am at the wonderful news that both Mrs Bonfield and Mrs Waldrom are pregnant.
While this is truly happy news, we understand that change can sometimes feel unsettling for some children. I am therefore pleased to let you know that Mrs Geer will be increasing her hours to provide the majority of the teaching in 3B.
We have also secured a new teacher to support in 4W, who will join us after half term. This will allow for an extended handover period to ensure a smooth transition for both staff and pupils.
Maths Home Learning
This year for home learning we would like the children to spend 20 minutes per week on TTRockstars but more specifically on the 'Garage' game. This option is all about increasing times table fluency and speed and your child making progress against their own 'Heatmap'. As most parents will be aware, heatmaps are shared with them at Parents’ Evening and are an indication of which times tables children are more or less confident with. Class teachers will check that children have spent time on TTRS and hopefully, over time, will see their heatmaps 'go green'.
We understand that for families of children in Year 3, TTRockstars may be completely new. We will explain how TTRockstars works and what the heat maps are at our parent information meetings and subsequently via the newsletter and Seesaw.
To raise the standards of times tables recall and ultimately improve maths fluency, we will be holding half termly TTRS battles in year groups. These will be fully celebrated with a range of certificates, at the end of each half term, including battle and gone green certificates plus Rock star status accolades and badges. We trust that as parents you will support your children in working hard to improve this vital maths skill. Please come to the parent meetings to learn more!
Parent Forum
Miss Simmons runs our Parent Forum and organises termly meetings where parents and school leaders come together to discuss an agenda that is jointly shaped by the leadership team and parent volunteers.
Towards the end of last year, we noticed a decline in attendance at these meetings. We know that parents' time is valuable but your input is incredibly important. Every one of you is an expert in what it is like to be a parent at our school and your perspective helps to shape the decisions we make and the direction we take as a school.
The Parent Forum has played a key role in many of the positive changes we have made over recent years and we would love to hear from as many parents as possible.
With that in mind, we would like to ask how you would prefer to get involved. We are happy to work in whatever way best suits the majority of parents so that we can gather the widest range of views and feedback.
Help Us Refresh Our School Library
At Almond Hill, we are passionate about encouraging children to read because they want to, not just because they have to. Creating a real love of reading is something we value deeply. As part of this, we’ve been talking with the children about our school library and their feedback has been clear - they would love to see some new and exciting books!
This is where we’d really appreciate your support. We know how incredibly generous our families have been in the past, particularly when helping to develop areas such as our relaxation spaces. We have worked with the children to compile a wishlist of books they would love to see in our library. If you are able to, we would be very grateful if you could consider purchasing a book from the list to donate to the school. We were touched by the number of people who purchased from our wishlist last year and it really has made a difference to our libraries.
Some families may even wish to mark a special occasion, such as their child’s birthday, by gifting a book creating a lasting contribution that can be enjoyed by many children for years to come.
Changes to Free School Meal Entitlement
From September 2026, all families receiving Universal Credit will be eligible for Free School Meals. As a result, a new two-tier Free School Meal status has been introduced:
Targeted Free School Meals
This applies to families whose annual household income (including Universal Credit) is £7,400 or less. Children with this status will qualify for Free School Meals, and schools will also receive Pupil Premium funding and other associated benefits.
Expanded Free School Meals
This applies to families who receive Universal Credit and have an annual household income of more than £7,400. Previously, these families would not have qualified for Free School Meals. Under the new arrangements, children with this status will be entitled to a Free School Meal; however, they will not attract Pupil Premium funding or other associated benefits.
If you believe that you should qualify for Free School Meal, please apply by visiting Free school meals and other benefits | Hertfordshire County Council for a quick 5 minute check.

Please Bring Coats to School
As is typical of this time of year, the weather has been a bit unpredictable. One minute there is glorious sunshine and the next, the heavens open! We try to get the children outside as often as possible – even in the rain so please can we ask that children are bringing a rain coat to school (even if the weather is looking promising!)

SEND and Pastoral Parent Drop ins...
We welcome all parents to attend our SEND and Pastoral 'drop ins' (whether your child has a diagnosis or not) if they feel they would benefit from speaking to our SENCo and/or our pastoral team. In our experience, almost all children benefit from pastoral support during their journey at school. Examples of where this has been supportive in the past are when friendship issues arise, loss of a pet, online issues outside of school, family break up and bereavement. We are always delighted when more parents join us.

Save The Date! Almond Hill Marathon
We’re excited to announce our Almond Hill Marathon on 9th October from 2.00pm on the school field! This event is open to all year groups, with parents invited to join us. You can walk, jog or run and of course, cheer everyone on! We’re supporting Mrs Geer, who is running the London Marathon next year to raise money for the NSPCC. More details, including how to sponsor and support this fantastic cause, will follow soon.

Year 6 Football Team and Year 5 and 6 Netball Team
We will soon be selecting children to represent Almond Hill as part of this year’s Year 6 Football Team and Year 5/6 Mixed Netball Team.
Each year, the number of children who would like to take part is much higher than the number of places available in the team (nine per team), which unfortunately means that some children will be disappointed. However, there will be plenty of other opportunities to enjoy football and netball throughout the year, including clubs, units within PE and, of course, lunchtime football.
Last year, we also selected a Year 6 Training Team and a Netball Reserves Team, which played friendly lunchtime games against the school teams in the lead-up to matches, providing valuable training for both groups. We are likely to put this in place again this year. Click below for more Information...
Year 6 Football Team and Year 5 and 6 Netball Team
How will the teams be selected?
Both teams are open to boys and girls. Over the years, we have been proud to have boys and girls represent Almond Hill in both football and netball and we encourage any child who is interested to take part in the selection process.
Netball: The netball league will begin at the end of September. There will be lunchtime trials for anyone in year 5 and 6 who would like to try out for the netball team. Children have been made aware of the dates in advance.
Football: The school football leagues do not begin until the end of October (and sometimes early November), so we have plenty of time to make sure the selection process is fair and gives children the opportunity to show us what they can do.
Towards the end of September, any Year 6 child who would like to be considered for the football team will be invited to complete a short application form, giving them the opportunity to tell us about their skills and attributes, why they would like to represent the school and what they feel they could bring to the team.
Following the applications, a number of children will be invited to attend two lunchtime trials. Children will be made aware of the dates in advance.
Trials
During the team trials, we will be looking not only at ability but also at how well children work as part of a team and the attitude they demonstrate. Children will be informed of the outcome after the second trial.
As always, although we participate in a competitive league, school teams are not solely about skill and sporting ability. Behaviour, attitude, teamwork and attendance are also important factors when representing Almond Hill and will all be taken into consideration during the selection process.
What happens once the team is selected?
Once the football team has been chosen, we will be given a tournament date, which is usually (although not always) held at Bedwell School. This tournament determines which Stevenage league we will be placed in for the season.
We will receive our fixture lists before the start of both seasons and begin arranging matches. Games are played after school and will be a mixture of home and away fixtures. Further information will, of course, be shared with parents once dates are confirmed.
A note for our supporters!
Many of our children also play for football teams outside of school, where parents and family members are often their biggest fans (and sometimes their harshest critics!) from the sidelines.
Please remember that these are school teams for children. Although the league is competitive, it should always be an enjoyable and positive experience for the children involved. The school league will not tolerate any form of aggressive or inappropriate behaviour towards children, staff, referees or other adults involved in matches.
We want our children to be proud to represent Almond Hill, play competitively, support one another and, most importantly, enjoy the experience.
