Issue 6 - 9th October 2026

Issue number:  6                                                                                                                               Date: 9th October 2026

Dear Parents/Carers,

What a busy and positive week we have had at school!

On Wednesday, we held our first Year 3 parent lunch, giving families the chance to try out the meals from HCL. It was lovely to welcome parents into school and share lunchtime together. We also had parents’ evening on Thursday, and we would value your feedback on the way we have organised it this year, so please do let us know what you think on next week’s newsletter.

Year 5 and 6 took part in an indoor rowing event this week, showing great determination and team spirit. We finished the week with the Marathon, helping Mrs Geer to raise money for the NSPCC. Thank you to everyone who supported this important fundraising event.

Good luck to our football team, who are playing their first tournament this evening. We look forward to hearing how you got on!

Looking ahead to next week

We have another busy and exciting week planned. Pupils will take part in a Table Tennis competition and a Netball match, giving them opportunities to develop their skills, teamwork and confidence. We will also be hosting our SEND and Pastoral Coffee Morning, as well as welcoming families to the 3C parent lunch.

Individual and sibling photos will also take place on Thursday next week. Year 6, please remember that your individual photographs will be used for the yearbook.

We are particularly excited about the Year 6 residential to Grafham. This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to enjoy new experiences, challenge themselves, strengthen friendships and create lasting memories together. We hope they have an amazing time!

Have a good weekend.

Emma Fordham,
Headteacher

Secondary School Applications

Please remember to apply for your child's secondary or upper school place for September 2027. The online application system is now open.

Please see the attached leaflet for details of open events. Further information is available at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/admissions.

Saturday 31 October 2026 - Closing date for applications (online and paper).

It is really important your home address is correct on Arbor and is the same address you use to apply for your child’s secondary school place. The admissions team do check with school and it can hold up your application if there is a different address.

Common SEN (Mis)Interventions

At our recent Open Evenings, I spoke about the increasing demand for SEND interventions in schools. As a school, we use both evidence from our own practice and findings from educational research to ensure that our limited resources are directed where they will have the greatest impact on children's outcomes.

For parents who are interested in learning more about this approach, I have included below a report entitled ‘Common SEN (Mis)Interventions’. The report explores a range of commonly used interventions, highlighting which approaches are supported by evidence and which may be less effective than is often assumed.

Importantly, this is an easy-to-read report written for parents and educators, rather than an academic paper. It avoids educational jargon and presents the key findings in a clear and accessible way, making it a useful resource for anyone interested in understanding how schools can best support children with SEND.

I hope you find it both informative and thought-provoking.

Anti Bullying Policy Review

Over the coming weeks, governors and staff will be reviewing our Anti-Bullying Policy. We want to ensure that the policy remains relevant, up to date and reflective of the needs of our school community. To help us achieve this, we would greatly appreciate feedback from all stakeholders.

Teachers have already been discussing this topic at staff meetings and we would now like to hear from children, parents and carers. Teachers will be having conversations with children and your views will help us to identify what is working well and whether there are any areas that could be improved.

Please take a few minutes to read the attached policy and share your thoughts using the comments section below.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute to this important review. Your feedback will help us ensure that our school continues to be a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all children.

Stevenage Community Trust – Christmas Gift Cards

The Stevenage Community Trust runs an annual Christmas Gift Card Scheme, providing £200 in gift cards to support struggling families and children in need across Stevenage and the surrounding villages.  Families are unable to self-refer for this support, as all applications must be submitted by a professional on their behalf.

If you feel this scheme could help ease financial pressures over the Christmas period and support with the cost of gifts or food for your children, please contact Mrs Wright in the strictest confidence: wrighth@almondhill.herts.sch.uk

Applications must be submitted by 31st October. To allow sufficient time for completion before the half-term break, please contact Mrs Wright no later than 19th October.

Heating Grants Available This Winter

As the colder months approach, families who are experiencing financial hardship may be able to access support with their energy costs through a Heating Grant. Applications are open from 1st October to 31st March. The scheme is available to people on a low income, including those in employment, receiving state benefits, or receiving a pension. Please note that you do not need to be receiving benefits to be considered for support.

Successful applicants will receive a £300 grant, which will be paid directly to their energy provider to help with heating costs during the winter months.

If you think you may be eligible, we encourage you to explore this opportunity and contact Mrs Wright in the strictest confidence: wrighth@almondhill.herts.sch.uk who can apply on your behalf.

SEND and Pastoral Parent Drop ins...

We welcome all parents to attend our SEND and Pastoral 'drop ins' (whether your child has a diagnosis or not) if they feel they would benefit from speaking to our SENCo and/or our pastoral team. In our experience, almost all children benefit from pastoral support during their journey at school. Examples of where this has been supportive in the past are when friendship issues arise, loss of a pet, online issues outside of school, family break up and bereavement. We are always delighted when more parents join us.

FOAH Update...

Halloween Disco on Monday 2nd November!

We are delighted to announce that Friends of Almond Hill will be hosting this year’s Halloween Disco on Monday 2nd November! πŸŽƒ

If you have some monster moves bursting to get out, then our Halloween Disco is the place for you!

We will be running four Halloween discos, one for each year group. Tickets are £6, which includes a drink and a slice of pizza, and must be purchased on Arbor (in the school shop) by Monday 19th October. This will be available from 4.30pm today.

Fancy dress is welcome but not compulsory.

This year, we’re going back to the good old-fashioned disco — music for everyone, dancing with all your friends, and no headphones required! πŸŽΆπŸ•ΊπŸ‘» So polish your pumpkins, grab your broomsticks and get ready to dance the night away!

Please do not leave/bring your child if you have not purchased a ticket. Unfortunately, we cannot allow entry without one and we would hate to cause any upset on the day.

Year 3
Children in Year 3 can stay at school at 3.15pm and their teacher will escort them to the disco. If your child is staying here, please ensure they have their costume or change of clothes with them. They will have time to change in class before the disco starts.

In the past, we have had parents arrive at the end of the school day to dress their children in elaborate outfits, which takes a lot of time and means children miss out on what is a relatively short time at the disco. If your child is dressing up, please allow them to bring their costume to school so they can get ready with their classmates and make the most of the disco.

Years 4–6
Children in Years 4–6 must be dropped at the hall doors by the main office via the main office gate, which will be open. If your child is booked to go to Premier after-school club, they can bring a change of clothes with them and will be taken to the disco by an adult.

All children must be collected from the quadrant by an adult. As it may be dark when your child is being collected, we will see the children out individually to ensure everybody’s safety. Please form an orderly queue!

Please remember that staff and parents volunteer their time for these events, so we would really appreciate a prompt collection at the end of the disco.

Phones are not allowed at the disco, so please make sure these are left at home.

We can't wait to see everyone on the dance floor! πŸ•·οΈπŸ‘»πŸŽƒ

TTRockstars Battle of the Bands

We are excited to announce our TTRS Battle from 2nd October to 11th October! Work as a team to beat the other classes in your year group. A little practice each day can make a big difference to fluency, speed and confidence with multiplication facts. Let’s work together to make this battle a huge success! Please encourage your child to log in and join the challenge between 2nd and 11th October. Every session counts!

Year 6 Indoor Rowing

Some children in Year 6 took part in a rowing event where they had to challenge themselves physically in a relay style competition. Each pupil had to complete 250m, achieving a combined distance of 2,000m. The rowing team came 2nd in heat 2 but we are still waiting for the overall results.

In total, the children rowed a total of 10,000m during the afternoon. After each attempt, the children had to reconvene as a team and decide what worked well and what needed to change. This meant there were some massive improvements! Well done team!

3L Parent Lunch

The 3L Tigers loved welcoming our visitors today for the Almond Hill dining experience. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to share a special mealtime with their grown-ups and enjoy the atmosphere of dining together at school. It was especially lovely to see the children and grown-ups conversing over their dinners, sharing stories and chatting about their day. Thank you to all those who could make it. We hope you enjoyed joining us and seeing the children in their usual dining environment. If you couldn’t attend this time, there are plenty more events in the near future so we look forward to welcoming you on another occasion. Finally, a huge thank you to our cooks for preparing all the extra scrumptious food and helping to make the dining experience so enjoyable for everyone.

Whole School Music Tech Workshop

Children took part in an exciting Music Tech workshop with Mr Jennings, where they discovered how producers use effects in audio recordings, how microphones work, and how sound frequencies can be visualised. They were curious, enthusiastic, and asked lots of brilliant questions.
