Issue 34 - 27th June 2025
Dear Families,
It is a long newsletter this week but there are lots of lovely news stories about the events that have taken place over the last 2 weeks which I hope families will enjoy reading.
Hertfordshire’s transition day is on Thursday 10th July. Children in Year 6 will spend the day at their new secondary school, Year 3, 4 and 5 will move up and spend the day in their new classes and our new Year 3 intake for September 2025 will spend the day at Almond Hill so it is a very busy day for all.
We know some parents/children find the transition and change of teacher/classes daunting and so as promised, we will ‘announce’ the new class teachers for 2025/26 during that week and before transition day. Families who are joining us from Letchmore will know who their teachers are prior to this date due to additional transition visits taking place.
Emma Fordham,
Headteacher

Admin Email Monitoring – July and Going Forward
Please be aware that from 3rd to 11th July, the admin email inbox will not be regularly monitored. If you need to contact the school during this time, please use the appropriate channels listed in the email sent to parents this week.
Weather Warnings
It is predicted to be particularly warm on various days next week however which days tends to change! Please feel free to allow your child to wear their PE kit on the days you feel necessary (not non uniform/home clothes). Please ensure they wear sun cream, have a water bottle and a hat with them every day. Talk to them about listening to their bodies and slowing down when it is warmer. We will put into place adaptations such as shorter times outside, reminders to drink and take shade and changes to planned activities where necessary. Working together will help alleviate some of the discomfort and allow us to enjoy the summer term. Although whatever we do, it will still be hot!
Save the Date - Navigating and Managing Online Safety Workshop for Parents
Mrs Lyons and Miss Andrews will be hosting this workshop to give parents the opportunity to discuss any worries or concerns they have around online safety (and mobile phones in particular). Like you, we are not experts but it is a good opportunity for us to look at these issues together and come up with some ideas to help support each other. This will take place from 3.30 until 4.30pm on Tuesday 1st July. Children are not permitted to attend this session so we will be offering a creche.
Regeneration – Changes
Please note, there have been some changes to our planned regeneration tours. Year 5 will still be visiting the local area but Year 6 will now be staying at school for this. However the date for Year 5 may change as the weather is predicted to be very warm next Tuesday.
Changes to the Holiday Food Voucher Scheme for benefits related Free School Meal Children.
We would like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the Holiday Food Voucher Scheme for children eligible for benefits-related Free School Meals.
Since December 2020, food vouchers have been provided to families through funding from the government, most recently via the Household Support Fund from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This funding has supported the distribution of vouchers during school holidays to help with the cost of living.
From April 2025 to March 2026, Hertfordshire County Council has received 12% less funding in its latest allocation of the Household Support Fund. As a result, the council has reviewed all schemes supported by this funding to ensure continued support can be delivered in the most effective way possible.
As part of these changes, the Holiday Food Voucher Scheme has been revised. Moving forward, vouchers will only be issued during the main school holiday periods and will no longer be provided for the October and February half terms.
The updated voucher distribution schedule is as follows:
-
Easter 2025 – £30 per eligible pupil
-
May Half Term 2025 – £15 per eligible pupil
-
Summer 2025 – £60 per eligible pupil
-
Christmas 2025 – £30 per eligible pupil
We understand this change may have an impact on families, particularly as the scheme has been in place for the past three years. If you or someone you know requires additional support, we encourage you to visit the ‘Support with the Cost of Living’ pages on the Hertfordshire County Council website, where further resources and advice are available.
Sharing Box
Please be reminded that we have started a small scale share box which will contain some food items and household necessities (such as toilet rolls/soap/washing up liquid). There is a labelled box in the quadrant in the mornings. Please give generously and feel able to take from it - no judgement. Please leave non-perishables in it such as baked beans/tuna and be mindful of allergies/unsafe items such as bleach. As always, nut products are not allowed in school. The children will be reminded not to touch. It is only for adults to use.
Year 6 Water Fight
As an end of year treat for good behaviour, children in Year 6 are invited to take part in a water fight in the afternoon on Tuesday 1st July. This has proved very popular in the past! Children will need additional clothes for the water fight as well as towels and a named water gun if they have one. Children have asked if they can bring water bombs and this has been agreed as long as they clear up the mess at the end! Please do not go to any extra expense as it may be cancelled at short notice.

FOAH Update
Frozen Fridays are back!
FOAH will be hosting Frozen Fridays every Friday in July! Children can enjoy a cool treat for £1 each (one per child).
You can pre-order on Arbor school shop now– the deadline each week is Monday at 9:00am to give us time to buy the lollies. Cash will also be accepted on the day but pre-ordering is really helpful. This is always a big hit (especially when it’s hot!) but if we have any extras, we’ll be selling them after school in the Quadrant.
-
Friday 4th July (deadline 9.00am Monday 1st July)
-
Friday 11th July (deadline 9.00am Monday 8th July
-
Friday 18th July (deadline 9.00am Monday 14th July)
Lots of orders have already been placed so thank you! Please note, if you want your child to have an ice lolly each week, you need to purchase one for each day.
Please note, you can only purchase for your own child/ren. So as much as it is a lovely idea, please don't bring cash in for others.
Thanks for your support – here's to a cool July!
Frozen Fridays - Year 6
As some of you may have noticed, Year 6 will be enjoying themselves at Legoland on 11th July which is the same day as one of the Frozen Fridays. So that Year 6 do not miss out on this, children who wish to, can purchase an ice lolly for this day and we will give them out to children on Monday 14th instead (they will be kept in the freezer!)
We can see many parents have not ordered for the 11th July but please do go back on and order one if you would like your child to have an ice lolly on the 14th.
This is for Year 6 only - the rest of the school will go ahead on the 11th as planned.

On Wednesday, our year 5/6 mixed netball team went to a tournament at Marriotts School. We played six games against different schools in Stevenage. As our netball season comes to end an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has come to a training session or played a game for us. Almond Hill have Achieved the Double!
While many of you, I'm sure, were enjoying the Occasional Day sunshine on Monday, the Year 6 football team were heading to Round Diamond to play their very last game in an Almond Hill shirt. It just so happens that this was a BIG last game to play as it was the School Cup final against a strong Woolenwick. Winning this game would…

On Tuesday 17th June a group of year 6's attended a cricket festival at the Stevenage cricket ground. Seven other schools attended and the winner of the whole day/tournament would go and represent the county. Unfortunately, we didn't win the tournament but we played really well. The first game was tricky as some of the c…

Last week Year 6 had a visit from staff at Barclays Bank. They arrived in their 'Big Blue Barclays Bank Bus' and spoke to the children about money, budgeting and how banking can be accessible to all.

Summer Reading Challenge
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme, Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors, will encourage children to explore the magical connection between storytelling and nature, all while addressing the dip in reading levels that can often occur during the summer holidays. In collaboration with The Reading Agency, throughout the summer, children joining ‘Story Garden’ can discover new books, participate in free activities at their local library, and explore the link between reading and the great outdoors.
The Challenge launches at all Hertfordshire Libraries on Saturday 5 July, and runs until Saturday 6 September. Children are encouraged to read six library books and collect exclusive stickers along the way. Those who complete the Challenge will receive a medal and certificate - while stocks last - and a chance to win tickets to an interactive workshop with award winning author, Sean Taylor. Keep an eye out for pop-up Maker Stations at select libraries during the summer holidays, offering simple and sustainable nature inspired activities. Visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/SummerReadingChallenge for details.
