Issue 13 - 5th December 2025
Dear Families,
Wow! The FOAH really outdid themselves this week. What a fabulous present room! They predicted this would be their biggest yet and it absolutely was. It was lovely to see so many volunteers helping too – your support is very much appreciated. I hope the children were able to find some special gifts for their loved ones. A big thank you to FOAH for organising and to our families for supporting. We cannot wait for the Christmas Fair now!
FOAH would really appreciate some extra volunteers for the Christmas Fair. We all want the event to be a great success, and a little additional help would make a big difference. There are lots of different stalls to support, all fully prepared with clear instructions so they’re easy to run. Even if you can spare just half an hour, it would be incredibly helpful. Volunteers are also welcome to move between stalls as needed. If you’re able to come along and lend a hand, please contact foah@almondhill.herts.sch.uk Thank you so much for your support!
Year 3, what an incredible play! You should all be very proud of yourselves. It isn’t easy to get up on stage and perform in front of an audience but you did it with sparkle! Well done! I hope parents enjoyed the show.
Last Day of Term
We will finish at 1:00pm on the last day of term. Please note there will be no childcare available on this day. As we are finishing on the same day as Letchmore, there will not be the option to stay for the remainder of the day, unlike when our finish dates differ. We kindly ask that all children are collected promptly at 1:00pm on Friday 19th December. Thank you.
Emma Fordham,
Headteacher
Kindness of the week - There is no Kindness of the Week this week—and not because the jar has gone missing again! We simply didn’t have assembly on Monday due to the INSET day.
Free Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy
‘How Parents and Teachers Can Let Go and Let Grow’
I have another great book I’d like to recommend to parents. As the title suggests, Free Range Kids encourages parents to give their children the freedom to develop resilience and build independence. This aligns closely with the thinking behind the ‘Let Grow’ initiative we’ve been trialling in school.
I promise I won’t continually bore you with book recommendations, but I found this one particularly interesting—and at times, very funny.

Christmas Lights
Mr Browne has put Christmas lights up in the Quad ready for our Christmas Fair and Carols in the Quad on Thursday 11th December. We have spoken to the children about these and asked them to leave the lights alone. Please can you ensure that children do not touch them, as they are within reach if they try. Thank you for your support.
Heating Grants
A gentle reminder for anyone who may find it helpful: families can still apply for the heating grant from Stevenage Community Trust until March. If you feel this could support you, please get in touch with Mrs Wright and she’ll be happy to provide a form.
FOAH Beanie Hats
With the weather turning colder, now is the perfect time to get your children a warm hat for winter. Friends of Almond Hill have designed a special school motto beanie for the children.
These are available to order now on the Arbor School Shop for £8 each.

I hope children are looking forward to their Christmas dinner and class Christmas fun days! This will start w/c 8th December with each year group having their own day! Children can wear Christmas jumpers and/or Christmas accessories on their year group’s day if they would like to. Please don’t feel you need to buy anything for this! If you don’t have anything Christmassy at home (or your child doesn’t want to dress up) non uniform or school clothes is absolutely fine! Please do help our cook to prepare for this very popular event by pre ordering your child’s lunch in advance via SchoolGrid.
- Monday 8th December – Year 3
- Tuesday 9th December – Year 4
- Wednesday 10th December – Year 5
- Friday 12th December – Year 6
If it is not your child’s Christmas dinner day, the kitchen will be offering a cold lunch option.
FOAH Christmas Fair - Thursday 11th December - 3.15-5.00pm
Our FOAH parent volunteers have been busy organising a fun and festive Fair for our school community and we can’t wait! This will be hosted after school (3.15-5.00pm) on Thursday 11th December and there will be lots of stalls in Oak House for you to have a look at. The doors to the hall and Year 3 classrooms will be open for families to enter and exit the school. The drop-off zone will remain unlocked and available for parking. Unfortunately, there is no space for buggies.
Carols in the Quad - Thursday 11th December - 5.00-6.00pm
All families are invited to join us for Christmas Carols on the evening of Thursday 11th December starting at 5.00pm straight after the Christmas Fair. This will take place outside in the quadrant with Mrs Cleaves leading the vocals. As this is outside, there is no need to book a place just turn up, wrap up warm, enjoy a festive treat and sing some carols. A bucket for volunteer donations will be present.
Year 6 Carol Service at St Nicholas Church - Tuesday 16th December
Year 6 children and our school choir will go to St Nicholas’ church on Tuesday 16th December for their carol service which is one of our favourite Almond Hill traditions. It is always a lovely service and a real pleasure to be a part of. We expect the service to last for approximately 1 hour. If you are attending, space in the church only allows for two parents per child. Please don’t arrive until 1.30pm to allow children to arrive and get organised.
We would also ask, to ensure all children are kept safe, that you allow children and staff to leave the church first and return to school and collect them from the school in the usual way.
They will need to be signed out but children in Year 6 and the choir can leave early on this day (providing they are collected) but we are not able to release siblings early. If children are leaving independently, they will need to wait until 3.15pm. If your child is in Year 6, please collect from the bottom of Acorn House and if your child is in Year 5, you can collect from their classroom door.
The drop off zone will be open for parents to use but please note, there is only room for 13 cars and this will not be manned so please drive carefully.
Talent Shows - Thursday 18th December
We end the final week with another Almond Hill tradition – our talent shows will take place during the school day on Thursday 18th December. Teachers will be running auditions for children who want to take part and they will be informed by their class teacher if they have been successful. They may bring special props or chosen outfits for their performance. Children in the upper school will perform in the morning and the lower school in the afternoon.

Preloved Book Sales
Our preloved book sales take place during the school day. Children can bring cash to school for these. Books cost 50p each.
These have now finished for the Autumn term and will recommence in the Spring. If you are having a pre-Christmas clear out, we would love some more donations of books for future sales. Please bring donations to your child’s class teacher or the school office. Thank you.

SEND and Pastoral Afternoon tea: Monday 8th December at 2:30pm
We welcome all parents to attend (whether your child has a diagnosis or not) if they feel they would benefit from speaking to our SENCo and/or our pastoral team. In our experience, almost all children benefit from pastoral support during their journey at school. Examples of where this has been supportive in the past are when friendship issues arise, loss of a pet, online issues outside of school, family break up and bereavement. We are always delighted when more parents join us. Just come to the school office to be signed in. This will take place in the Friendship Room – please come to the office to sign in.

Christmas Fair
We hope you’re getting excited for our Christmas Fair on Thursday 11th December, 3:15–5:00pm.
We anticipate the fair will be busy so to help keep queues short and things running smoothly, we’ll be using a token system at most stalls. Children can buy bags of tokens to spend instead of cash. (Cash will still be accepted on the day of course, but tokens — especially pre-ordered ones — will make everything much quicker.) Most stalls will be one token/50p per go and there will be about 20 stalls.
And here’s the fun bit: pre-order your tokens and get bonus tokens for free!
Token Bonus Offers:
- Buy 5 tokens for £2.50 → get 1 free
- Buy 10 tokens for £5.00 → get 2 free
- Buy 15 tokens for £7.50 → get 3 free
- Buy 20 tokens for £10.00 → get 4 free
Tokens are available to buy on Arbor in School Shop Products from today until 12:30pm Tuesday 9th December. All pre-ordered tokens will be handed out to children in their classrooms on the day of the fair, Thursday 11th December. Tokens will be available to buy at the fair, but the bonus token offer only applies to tokens purchased in advance.
We can’t wait to see you there for some festive fun!
Christmas Raffle
We have some brilliant prizes up for grabs in the Almond Hill Christmas Raffle. Raffle tickets will be available to buy at the Christmas Fair next Thursday, 11th December, using cash payments only. But for those who prefer debit card payments, you can buy Raffle tickets on Arbor for a short time in advance of the Fair!
Simply go to the Arbor app and look in the shop for the Christmas Fair Raffle options. Tickets cost £1 each, but there’s also an option to increase your chances of winning by choosing the 15 tickets for £10 option, or 30 tickets for £20!
Arbor sales will close at 3pm on Wednesday 10thDecember next week. Winners will be drawn after the Fair, Thursday 11th December. Winners will be notified the following day.
Raffle tickets can be bought for cash at the Christmas Fair itself, but we cannot take card payments for raffle tickets at the event. So, if you want tickets but cannot get to the fair, or only want to pay for them by card, getting them on Arbor is the best option.
