Issue 24 - 13th March 2026

Dear Families,

It’s been another busy but lovely week at Almond Hill. We’ve enjoyed a whole range of activities including sporting events, parents’ evenings, the Year 3 parent lunch, the Mother’s Day Present Room and of course, our fantastic science morning today. I hope families have enjoyed all of our engagement events.

Looking ahead to next week, Year 3 will be taking part in their regeneration visit, our Rocksteady bands will be showcasing their talents to their families and we’ll be welcoming pupils from across Stevenage as we host the Voices of Hertfordshire event.

Unbelievably, we are already nearing the end of term. Please note that school will close at 12.30pm on the last day of term.

I know parents will want to join me in wishing Miss Porter the very best for her wedding this weekend. We hope she has a wonderful day. She will be keeping her maiden name at work so there will be no new name to remember next week!

Key Messages

Ofsted Report and Feedback

You may have seen that The Comet recently published an article about our Ofsted inspection.  Although this was not expected, I’m really pleased they highlighted some of the wonderful strengths from the report. I was also told about some lovely comments shared on Facebook recommending our school. I am so grateful to our families for your support and it means a great deal to know that so many of you are proud to promote Almond Hill. Positive word of mouth makes a real difference. It helps us welcome new families (which in turn supports our budget) and it contributes to the happy, thriving environment we want for all children and staff. Thank you for continuing to champion our school — it benefits our whole community.

Science Morning for Parents and Feedback

A BIG thank you to everyone who attended our science morning today. We had more than 130 family members join us which is fantastic. We hope you enjoyed it. Hopefully, we will be able to share photos with you next week.

Did you enjoy the science morning?

Parent Survey

Parents appreciate the school’s visible efforts to promote online safety, particularly the posters displayed at the school entrance, which help raise awareness of key online safety messages as families arrive each day. However, parents feel that communication could be more regular and consistent, with information tailored to specific age groups, so families know what is most relevant for their child’s stage of development. They also highlighted the value of interactive workshops or sessions where students and teachers explore online safety together.

Parents note that without regular, age‑appropriate education and guidance:

  • Children may not recognise online risks such as strangers, scams, inappropriate content, or data sharing.

  • They may be more vulnerable to cyberbullying, unsafe gaming interactions, or pressure to share personal information.

  • Families may miss opportunities to put home safety measures in place if they are unaware of emerging online trends or threats.

Attendance

If children have repeated time off for medical reasons, unfortunately we may not be able to authorise the absence without medical evidence when attendance is an issue. I appreciate there will be times that you may not be able to get evidence and therefore the absence will be marked as unauthorised.  It is therefore important the school are aware of any on-going health problems so we can put the correct support in place. The local authority would expect me to liaise with parents and the attendance officer to try and find solutions/ways to improve attendance. Please don’t worry about this. This is the usual process and doesn’t always result in a fine.

Rocksteady Concert – Wednesday 18th March

We hope you are looking forward to the Rocksteady concert on Wednesday 18th March. The concert doesn't start until 2.15 so please don't arrive too early as we can't let you in the hall before the bands are ready. You will be asked to sign in at the main office and we ask that you please remember to sign out at the end. If the concert finishes before the end of the school day, you are welcome to take your child home but we will not be able to get siblings out of classes. They will need to stay until the end of the school day as normal.

Swimming Information for all

Thank you to those of you who have already completed the consent request on Arbor for the swimming lessons in the pop up pool. Please note, if your child has already achieved their 25m swim we have marked the consent manually to 'declined' so you do not need to do anything. Consent received this year will remain in place until your child leaves Almond Hill. You are welcome to amend your consent at any time by contacting the school office.

Please can I remind parents who wish to make a contribution towards their child's swimming lessons in the pop-up pool that the payment request will close on Friday 27th March.

Year 6 Leavers’ Hoody

Please remember to order your child’s leavers’ hoody. We have only received orders from 1/3 of the year group. The deadline for ordering is 9.00am on Monday 20th April. After this date, if we have not received your selection, we will choose a size on your behalf so the order can be placed in time. Please note, the order cannot be changed once it has been placed.

Art Club – Survey for Parents of Children in Years 4 and 5

We are looking into what other clubs we can offer to families. Some local schools offer an art club which is run by ‘My After School Art Club’. We would like to gather an idea of interest for this club if we were to introduce it next year. It would be for Years 5 and 6 (so current 4 and 5) and would be a six week club costing £12 per session.

Information on the provider can be found on their website: https://www.myafterschoolartclub.com/

Child's Year Group
Would your child be intersted in attended the art club?
Would you be happy to pay £12 per session?

Advance notice – change to school dinner prices

As of 1st April 2026, the price of a school meal will increase from £3.45 to £3.55.

Food Safety

I am pleased to inform parents that our kitchen was awarded a food hygiene rating of 5 in our recent audit. A big well done to Sue and the kitchen staff.

50p Book Sales

Our pre-loved book sales take place during the school day. Children can bring cash to school for these. Books cost 50p each.

  • Wednesday 25th March

We would love to add more books to our sales (particularly chapter books). If you have any you would like to donate, they would be gratefully received. Please give any books to your child’s class teacher.

SEND and Pastoral – Save the Dates

We welcome all parents to attend our SEND and Pastoral 'drop ins' (whether your child has a diagnosis or not) if they feel they would benefit from speaking to our SENCo and/or our pastoral team. In our experience, almost all children benefit from pastoral support during their journey at school. Examples of where this has been supportive in the past are when friendship issues arise, loss of a pet, online issues outside of school, family break up and bereavement. We are always delighted when more parents join us.

Afternoon tea: Monday 23rd March - 2.30-3.15pm
This is a change of date as we have ADD-vance coming to join us.

Mother’s Day Present Room

FOAH volunteers ran a fantastic Mother’s Day Present Room on Thursday, helping the children have fun and choose gifts to take home for the special ladies in their lives. It was our busiest Mother’s Day yet, with more than 600 gifts chosen!  Thank you so much to all the FOAH volunteers who gave up their time to make the event happen. We hope everyone has a lovely Mother’s Day on Sunday.

All Voices Should be Equal

All Voices Should be Equal Last week, children in the upper school took part in some learning titled 'All Voices Should Be Equal'. They learnt about marginalised groups who haven't had their voices heard equally and specifically focused on learning about racial inequality (including The British Empire and The Slave Trade), gender inequality (where…

Handball

Handball When we got to Barnwell, we had a quick team talk and found out when we were playing. Then we got started straight away. We lost our first two games 1–3, which was a bit sad, but we didn’t give up. After the refs had a little break, we started playing again. This time we won our next game 5–1, and then we won the…

🚶‍♀️‍➡️🚲 BIG WALK & WHEEL 2026 🚲🛴

From 16–27th March, Almond Hill Junior School is taking part in the Big Walk and Wheel Challenge! Children are encouraged to walk, scoot or cycle to school and help us log as many active journeys as possible.

💪 Be active
🌍 Help the environment
🏫 Help our school win prizes

If you can, swap the car for an active journey (even part of the way counts!)

What do you need to do?
Encourage your child(ren) to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event.

Including everyone
We want to make sure that everyone can get involved in Big Walk and Wheel. We know it may be more difficult for some pupils to take part than others. If you want to discuss more about your child(ren)’s specific needs, please contact Miss Waldrom and we will make sure to look into how your child(ren) can take part.

Why we are taking part
Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing. Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A 2021 YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school and that children thought active travel was the best away to bring down these pollution levels. Plus, there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part!

Useful resources
To help you prepare, Walk Wheel Cycle Trust has developed a handy Parent/ Caregiver page on the challenge website. It is packed with advice to help you have a hassle-free journey to school. For more information about the event go to www.bigwalkandwheel.org.uk.

Enjoy the challenge!

‘The School Gate Gridlock’

As part of the Let Grow initiative, Omata in Year 4 has written a wonderful, thought-provoking article about the congestion around the school gates. I think this is a great way to get us all thinking! Mrs Fordham is hoping to see Omata at journalism club too...
