Issue 31 - 15th May 2026

Dear Families

We have been incredibly impressed with how well the children have conducted themselves this week while our Year 6 pupils have been completing their SATs tests. A huge congratulations to Year 6! You have worked so hard and you should be very proud of yourselves.

Looking ahead, we have an exciting and active week planned, with a particular focus on sport. Some children will be taking part in a golf event on Monday, Year 4 will attend a frisbee event on Wednesday and of course, we have both of our Sports Days to look forward to. Please take a moment to read the additional information about Sports Day provided below.

I would also like to highlight Monday’s SEND and pastoral drop-in session. We are very fortunate to be joined by a representative from SPACE and I strongly encourage parents to make the most of this valuable opportunity for support and advice. Our thanks go to our SENCo, Mrs Birchall, for organising these visitors.

Finally, a reminder for parents who wish to attend the Relationships and Health Policy consultation: this will take place in school next Wednesday at 5.30pm with Miss Andrews.

Have a good weekend.

Emma Fordham,
Headteacher

Healthy School Week

Healthy Eating Week

Healthy Eating Week is about improving our health through eating healthy food and being active. We will be talking about healthy eating habits, the importance of exercise and different ways to stay active. There will also be some fun home learning set for May half term.

Walk to School Week 18th to 22nd May 2026

We’re delighted to announce that our school will be taking part in Walk to School Week this May!

This is a fantastic opportunity to encourage healthy habits, reduce congestion around the school, and help lower carbon emissions – all while making the journey to school more fun.

Walking or wheeling to school has so many benefits: it boosts physical and mental wellbeing, helps children arrive alert and ready to learn, and supports a cleaner, greener environment.

How you can help:

  • Encourage your child to walk or wheel to school as often as possible during the week.

  • If walking the whole way isn’t practical, try a ‘Park and Stride’ – park a short distance from school and walk or wheel the last part of the journey.

To make things even more exciting, each class will be running a friendly competition to see who can walk or wheel the most during the week.

That’s not all – following Walk to School Week, we’ll also be supporting Clean Air Day on Thursday 18th June 2026. More details will follow soon.

Thank you for helping us make a positive difference for our children and our community. Let’s get moving!

RSHE Policy Parental Consultation

Please find attached our new draft relationships and health education (including sex education) policy. We are inviting all parents to read the draft of this new policy which includes our new PSHE curriculum from September 2026. Parents are invited to an in-person consultation with Miss Andrews (PSHE lead) at 5.30pm on the 20th May. If you are unable to attend this but would still like to ask a question or make a comment, please email admin@almondhill.herts.sch.uk

Sports Day - Next Week

Upper school (Year 5 and 6) – Wednesday 20th May
Lower school (Year 3 and 4) – Friday 22nd May

Both sports days will take place in the morning (approximately 9-11am)

Although we have allowed 9.00am-11.00am for the sports days, they may finish earlier, especially if the races are over quickly! Parents can come round to the field after drop off. The gates closest to St Nicholas Church will remain closed but unlocked during sports day for anyone who will be arriving after 9.00am. All children must go to class first to register as normal and then will be brought out to the school field for sports day.

Parents are welcome to take photos at the sports days but please ensure these are for personal use only and not shared on social media.

Upper School Running Order

Lower School Running Order

Before the upper school sports day performance on 20th May, I am delighted to let you know that the street dance and cheerleading club will be performing. The Wednesday Cheerleading and Street Dance Clubs are run by Lindsey Pollard Dance, suitable for all years and abilities - no previous dance experience needed. Spaces are still available and can be booked using the following link - www.lindseypollarddance.com

The ‘Dance with Dani’ club will be performing at the lower school sports day on Friday. Dance with Dani takes place on a Tuesday after school. The club can be booked online via the link below:
https://my.classmanager.com/dance-with-dani

A reminder of your child’s house colour will be sent via email. Ideally, children will participate in their house teams so please can they wear a t-shirt in their house colour if possible.  Please do not worry if your child does not have an item of clothing in their house colour. We do not expect parents to purchase anything. We have bibs for anyone who hasn't got a top in their colour.

Currently the weather report looks unsettled but we all know what British weather can be like. We will aim to hold the sports days as planned but will move them to after half term if this is unavoidable. We may have to make this call with late notice to parents and apologise in advance if this is the case.

The back up sports days are as follow:

Upper school (Year 5 and 6) – Wednesday 3rd June
Lower school (Year 3 and 4) – Wednesday 10th June

Reading Challenge

Next week marks the start of the schoolwide reading challenge which is planned to last for six school weeks ending on Friday 3rd July. Your child will receive some reading challenges and a pizza template so look out for these in hard copy and on Seesaw. The idea is that they complete the challenges and get their sheet signed from someone at home. Then they receive a 'pizza topping' for each challenge they complete and stick these to their pizza template. There will be supplementary challenges along the way and some prizes for highest individual and class achievements so watch this space!

FOAH Update

1, 2, 3, 4… We Declare an Almond Hill Penny War!

Get ready for the Almond Hill Penny War competition - where each class works together to collect coins and earn points!

Each class will collect coins in their jar to earn points...

  • Copper pennies (1p & 2ps) & Notes add points to your class total.
  • Gold & Silver coins (l5p, 10p, 50p, £1, £2) can be put in other classes’ jars to take points away from them!

The goal is to have the highest number of points by the end of the competition week on the 22nd May.  The class with the most points wins a special reward!
Where to put your coins: All class jars will be in the reception area. The jars will be taken outside for sports days.

Remember...

Put coppers and notes into your own class jar to help your team!  Add silver and gold coins to other classes’ jars to lower their score!

All the money raised will help support our school—so start collecting your coins and let the Penny War begin!

Father's Day Present Room

Just a reminder that Father's Day Present Room takes place on Thursday 18th June, as per the school calendar. Look out for further info on email when payments open in Arbor on Friday 22nd May.

Year 4 French Theme Time - Next Week

Next week, Year 4 will be taking part in a special French-themed learning experience with Mrs Pridmore. The children will be exploring the traditional story Roule Galette (similar to The Gingerbread Man), learning a French song and creating their own puppets inspired by the story.

We are sure this will be a fun and engaging way for the children to develop their language skills and creativity. Keep an eye out for photos to follow!
