Issue 32 - 22nd May 2026
Dear Families.
Another exciting week at Almond Hill has come to an end, with plenty of enrichment opportunities for the children. They have enjoyed activities such as golf, frisbee, sports days and the start of our regeneration tours.
After half term, we will begin the final stretch of this academic year. During this time, children will be preparing for their transition into new classes or, for some, the move to secondary school. We have robust transition plans in place for all pupils, and we will share further details with parents once these are finalised. In the meantime, please note that the Hertfordshire transition day is on Thursday 9th July.
Wishing you all a wonderful half term—enjoy the sunshine!

Key Messages
Sports Day
I would like to thank parents for bearing with us (and the weather) this week whilst we navigated the sports days. Your patience and understanding makes a huge difference. We will upload the photos from both days when we come back from half term. You will notice there are fewer pictures of the lower school sports day. This is because many more children do not have image consent and therefore cannot be photographed.
A reminder about items brought from home
We have recently been made aware that some children are bringing items in from home and ‘trading’ or swapping them with others. While this may not always be happening during class time, it can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or upset if items are lost, damaged or not returned, which in turn disrupts learning.
To help avoid any difficulties, we kindly ask that children do not bring items in from home to swap or trade with others. This will ensure that everyone’s belongings remain safe and that there are no unnecessary worries or disagreements.
Absence During Term Time
We have seen an increase in requests for absence during term time. We are ambitious for all our children and give the same level of attention to attendance as to other matters concerning wellbeing and achievement in school. Any child whose absence falls below 96% will be monitored and parents may receive a letter from the school inviting you to discuss ways in which we can support families and children to develop better attendance. Of course, we appreciate and understand that sometimes absence is out of your control and there may be times where children are not in school because they are too ill to attend. However, if any child is regularly absent through repeated illness then parents may be asked to provide medical evidence to support this. This absence will be recorded as an unauthorised absence should such medical evidence not be provided and not all medical evidence may be accepted.
A reminder of the changes:
-
The new national threshold of 10 unauthorised sessions for any reason (equivalent to 5 school days) within a rolling 10 school week period for when a penalty notice must be considered.
-
The new rules mean you are no longer able to take your child out of school for one week’s holiday without a penalty notice being issued.
-
There was an increase in the penalty fine from £60 to £80 if paid in 21 days. If the fine is not paid by the first 21 days, it will rise to £160 if paid within 28 days of being issued.
-
If a second penalty fine is issued to the same parent for the same child within a 3-year rolling period, the fine will automatically rise to £160 with no option to pay the lower rate of £80.
-
If a parent then commits a third offence in a 3-year rolling period, the local authority will need to consider other enforcement options available to them
For more information, please look at the information on our website: https://www.almondhill.herts.sch.uk/page/?title=Attendance+%28including+absence+request+forms%29&pid=225
There is a clause within the Hertfordshire code of conduct which states that a fine can be applied for when absences fall under the 10 sessions threshold, should parents clearly attempt to avoid the national threshold. The fine can also be applied for when the threshold has not been met if parents take repeated holidays or have time off for birthdays or other family events.

Thursday 18th June 4.00-5.00pm - Tune into ASD
Following feedback from parents this session has been planned outside of the school day.
We are extremely fortunate to have representatives from a range of organisations joining us at our SEND and Pastoral drop in sessions. These sessions provide an invaluable opportunity for parents to speak directly with professionals who are often parents of neurodivergent children themselves. We would strongly encourage parents to attend these drop ins if you feel they would be of benefit to you or your child.
Tune in to ASD: ‘Tune into ASD is a service with passionate, driven and dedicated facilitators, consultants, coaches, support staff and volunteers who have a desire to see Neurodivergent children, young people and adults thrive in every area of their lives. We aim to increase understanding of the Autistic spectrum and other Neurodivergent conditions, support and equip families, educators, businesses and charities to provide inclusive environments which gives access to all areas of learning and improve the wellbeing for all. We also support Neurodivergent adults discover how to live successful lives.’ https://tuneintoasd.com/

FOAH Update...
What an exciting week it has been with Penny Wars in full swing!
There has certainly been a competitive buzz around the school, and it has been fantastic to see so many children getting involved and classes working so brilliantly together.
A big thank you to everyone who took part and of course the FOAH for organising another fantastic event!. We can’t wait to share the winning classes with you once all the jars have been carefully counted!
Father's Day Present Room
We're pleased to announce that Father's Day Present Room gifts are now available to pre-order. Each gift is £2.50 and you can place your order in the School Shop area of Arbor: https://almond-hill-junior-school.uk.arbor.sc/?/home-ui/index
The Father's Day Present Room will take place during the school day on Thursday 18th June. On that day, the children can choose a secret present for the important men in their life (Dads, Stepdads, Grandads, Uncles, Carers, and so on). There’s no limit to the number of gifts you can buy per child. Each gift is then brought home at collection time in an individual sealed giftbag that can be hidden at home, ready to give on Father's Day!
Please tell your child for whom they are choosing gifts before the day itself, so they can pick suitable presents.
Please also note, although there is no limit to the number of gifts you can buy, Arbor will only allow you to purchase 9 at a time. If you would like to buy more than 9, you will need to do separate transactions.
The deadline for payments in Arbor is 3pm on Friday 12th June.
Cash payments will be accepted on the day of the present room if needs be, but we would be grateful if payments could be made in advance on Arbor, as this enables us to plan ahead and make sure there are enough gifts for every child taking part.
All funds raised will go towards equipment and events that enhance the children’s school experience. If you have any questions, please reach out to the FOAH team. Our email is: foah@almondhill.herts.sch.uk
We hope the children enjoy choosing special gifts!
