Issue 33 - 5th June 2026

Dear Families

What a start to Summer 2! This week has been a real buzz of activity across the school, with Year 3 enjoying their Wise Up Day, Year 4 heading out on their regeneration tours, and Year 5 beginning their PE sessions at Barclay.

Next week promises to be a little quieter but still full of important moments. Year 4 will be taking part in their Multiplication Tables Check, the netball team have a match on Friday and 5B will be visiting Barclay for their PE lesson.

Football Free Fridays

Those who attended our recent Parent Forum will know that we have some exciting plans to enhance play at Almond Hill next year. We’re already beginning to introduce some positive changes.

While football is hugely popular and something many children enjoy at lunchtime, it can sometimes lead to disagreements and challenges to manage. Without the benefit of VAR, these situations can occasionally cause unnecessary tension.

With this in mind, we have introduced Football Free Fridays. This provides children with the opportunity to explore other ways to enjoy their lunchtime - encouraging creativity, imagination and unstructured play through games they create themselves.

We’ve already seen a positive impact from this small change and are excited about what lies ahead. Our aim is not simply to make playtimes a little easier or children a little happier but to create a lasting cultural shift in how play is experienced across the school.

Help Us Refresh Our School Library

At Almond Hill, we are passionate about encouraging children to read because they want to, not just because they have to. Creating a real love of reading is something we value deeply.  As part of this, we’ve been talking with the children about our school library and their feedback has been clear - they would love to see some new and exciting books!

This is where we’d really appreciate your support. We know how incredibly generous our families have been in the past, particularly when helping to develop areas such as our relaxation spaces. We have worked with the children to compile a wishlist of books they would love to see in our library. If you are able to, we would be very grateful if you could consider purchasing a book from the list to donate to the school.

Some families may even wish to mark a special occasion, such as their child’s birthday, by gifting a book creating a lasting contribution that can be enjoyed by many children for years to come.

Homework Survey

Thank you to the parents who completed the recent homework survey. It is always beneficial to gain your views. It is clear that most parents feel there is a benefit to homework but the written feedback also tells us we need to look at how homework is set and make some changes. Many of the comments spoke about families wanting to support learning which is fantastic.

Maths Open Afternoon – Wednesday 17th June

We are pleased to invite parents to join us for a Maths Open Afternoon

Date: Wednesday 17th June
Time: 1:30pm – 3:00pm (approx.)

The session will begin with a short maths talk in the hall, led by Miss Simmons, including a live demonstration of Maths.co.uk.

Following this, parents will be invited to visit classrooms to observe and take part in their child’s learning. Each class will be completing an engaging, statistics-based maths challenge.

Key information:

  • Please enter via the quad and go straight into the hall where you will be asked to sign in

  • Parents of siblings are welcome to visit more than one class

  • The session will finish at approximately 3:00pm

  • You may take your child home at this time via the usual exits, if you wish and staff will sign them out

  • If you would like to collect siblings early, you will need to go to their classes to sign them out

Road Safety Reminder

We would like to remind all families to take extra care during drop-off times, particularly when parking on roads around the school.

We have recently been made aware of a near miss involving a child crossing the road unexpectedly. While we understand that parking can be challenging, children may not always have the awareness to judge traffic safely.

Please can we ask that you:

  • Avoid dropping children off on the opposite side of the road where possible

  • Accompany your child across the road, rather than sending them alone

  • Ensure it is safe before crossing and encourage children to stop, look and listen

These small steps make a big difference in keeping all of our children safe.

Year 6 Graduations – Updated

We are in the process of planning for graduation and we would like to ask for your help!

If possible, please could you send in a photo (digitally) of your child either as a baby or toddler/younger child before they came to Almond Hill. This is not a necessity but would be nice. If you want your child to be included in this, please send your photo in by Tuesday 30th June. By sending the photo in, we will take this as consent for using for the purpose of graduation.

Please send photos to year6@almondhill.herts.sch.uk and use 'baby photo' as the subject.

There are still some families who have not yet booked tickets for graduation. Please log on to the Arbor App to order your tickets. As previously mentioned, spaces are limited to 3 per family. The booking will close at 12.00pm on Friday 26th June. Please book your places to enable us to plan the space in the hall.

SEND and Pastoral Drop Ins

Thursday 18th June 4.00-5.00pm - Tune into ASD

Following feedback from parents this session has been planned outside of the school day.

We are extremely fortunate to have representatives from a range of organisations joining us at our SEND and Pastoral drop in sessions. These sessions provide an invaluable opportunity for parents to speak directly with professionals who are often parents of neurodivergent children themselves. We would strongly encourage parents to attend these drop ins if you feel they would be of benefit to you or your child.

Tune in to ASD: ‘Tune into ASD is a service with passionate, driven and dedicated facilitators, consultants, coaches, support staff and volunteers who have a desire to see Neurodivergent children, young people and adults thrive in every area of their lives. We aim to increase understanding of the Autistic spectrum and other Neurodivergent conditions, support and equip families, educators, businesses and charities to provide inclusive environments which gives access to all areas of learning and improve the wellbeing for all.  We also support Neurodivergent adults discover how to live successful lives.’ https://tuneintoasd.com/

FOAH Update...

A reminder that Father's Day Present Room gifts are currently available to pre-order in Arbor. Each gift is £2.50 and you can place your order in the School Shop area of Arbor: https://almond-hill-junior-school.uk.arbor.sc/?/home-ui/index

The deadline for payments in Arbor is 3pm on Friday 12th June.

The Father's Day Present Room will take place during the school day on Thursday 18th June. On that day, the children can choose a secret present for the important men in their life (Dads, Stepdads, Grandads, Uncles, Carers, and so on). There’s no limit to the number of gifts you can buy per child. Each gift is then brought home at collection time in an individual sealed giftbag that can be hidden at home, ready to give on Father's Day!

Things to remember about this fun event:

  • Please tell your child for whom they are choosing gifts before the day itself, so they can pick suitable presents.

  • Only Almond Hill children can attend, but children can choose gifts on behalf of siblings not at the school.

  • Although there is no limit to the number of gifts you can buy, Arbor will only allow you to purchase 9 at a time. If you would like to buy more than 9, you will need to do separate transactions.

  • Cash payments will be accepted on the day of the present room if needs be, but we would be grateful if payments could be made in advance on Arbor, as this enables us to plan ahead and make sure there are enough gifts for every child taking part.

  • All funds raised will go towards equipment and events that enhance the children’s school experience. If you have any questions, please reach out to the FOAH team. Our email is: foah@almondhill.herts.sch.uk

We hope the children enjoy choosing special gifts!

Wise Up Team-Building Event

The children had a wonderful time taking part in our Wise Up team-building event. Working together, they showed excellent teamwork and real resilience as they tackled each challenge with enthusiasm and determination. Even when the rain came down, we carried on and kept smiling!

A huge thank you to all our parent helpers for their support and encouragement throughout the day. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to build confidence, strengthen friendships and enjoy learning together. Well done Year 3!
