Issue 13 - 8th December 2023

Dear Families,

The countdown to Christmas at Almond Hill is in full swing and wow! What a fantastic start! Children in Year 4 went on the Faith Tour on Tuesday where they visited the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, All Saints Parish Church and the Jamia Gulshane Baghdad Mosque. On Wednesday, Year 6 went to visit Thomas Alleyne, one of our feeder schools, to watch their production of ‘Back to the 80’s. Children and staff in Year 3 put on a wonderful Christmas Musical on Thursday to get us into the festive spirit and today, FOAH hosted our Christmas Present Room.

Next week, each year group will be having their Christmas dinners and on Thursday our choir will be making their way to Hampson Park to sing carols. On their year group Christmas dinner days, children will also have their class parties and they may wear a Christmas jumper, party clothes or something festive.

On Monday 18th children in Year 6 and the choir will be having their church rehearsal ready for the big performance on Tuesday. Please note, the church can only accommodate one parent per child to watch. We will finish the week with the Christmas Talent Shows with the upper school’s taking place in the morning on Tuesday 19th and the lower school’s will be in the afternoon.

We break for Christmas at 1.00pm on Wednesday 20th December.

Emma Fordham,
Headteacher

In Other News…

Year 4 and 5 DT Afternoon
Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed their DT craft afternoon making festive hand puppets. We loved seeing their creativity. Thank you to all the adults who were able to come in and help out. We hope you enjoyed it!

Year 4 Faith Tour
Year 4 had an inspiring and enriching day on their Faith Tour to a Church, Mosque and Gurdwara. They listened attentively to all the Faith leaders, asking insightful questions and impressed all the adults and leaders with their knowledge. Key facts in RE has been a focus this term and the children demonstrated their sticky learning brilliantly! In the church, children explored artefacts over thousands of years old. In the mosque, children listened to an example of the daily prayer call. In the Gurdwara, children ate their lunches in the Langar kitchen and watched the Chaur (brush) being waved over the holy book. Some comments were:
Gurdwara leader - "You could be leading this session with all your knowledge."
Christian leader - "Your questions and observation skills are very detailed!"

The year 4 staff commented on the polite manner and behaviours of the children, including their respect for the different faiths. Well done year 4!

Year 3 Enterprise Project
Year 3 will be selling the moving Christmas cards that they are making for their DT/enterprise project from their classrooms at the end of the day on Monday 18th December. Parents are welcome to come in, have a look at (and hopefully buy) their projects! Please bring cash in for the sale.

Stevenage Regeneration Team
Almond Hill is working with the Stevenage Regeneration Team with lots of fun activities and events coming up. The first thing we have been involved in is creating artwork for their Instagram advent calendar. Follow 'stevenagebetter' to see if your child's work features.

Year 3 and 4 Christmas Tree Project
Thank you to the children in Year 3 and 4 who helped create our Christmas tree. Keep an eye out for it in the Westgate Centre and ask your teacher for a booklet to enter the competition to win a hamper. You can also download the booklet by clicking the link below.

Reverse Advent
A big thank you to everyone who donated to the reverse advent this year. We are truly inspired by your generosity. The Food Shed commented on how much there was – in fact, it completely filled their van!

Book Sale
After such a successful book sale recently, we do not have enough books for another sale this month. If you have any books at home that your child no longer reads, please consider donating them to our school! The monthly book sales will return in January.
TTRockstars
In the first celebration assembly (Friday) of every month, children's achievements from Times Tables Rockstars will be shared and recognised. This includes most improved studio speed, most improved accuracy and new rock statuses. For the top three rock statuses - Rock Star, Rock Legend and Rock Hero, children will be presented with a certificate. We are now also offering the option for parents to purchase badges for these levels. Upon receiving their certificates in this assembly, children can ask their teacher for an order slip to be taken home with the badge details and how to order on school gateway. Badges are £1.80 and totally optional. If you have any questions, please ask your child's class teacher.

Archery Finals
Almond Hill competed extremely well at the Archery Finals, placing in the top three in many different categories. The resilience shown at this event was some of the best their accompanying teachers have seen; it was a tricky event that required a high level of accuracy. All children were allowed two rounds of three arrows and final results were very pleasing.
