  • Year 3 - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Workshop

    On Monday during assembly, Claire Murrel, an environmental officer from Stevenage Borough Council visited our school to talk about what we can do to reduce, reuse and recycle. We learnt that it is best to reduce and reuse - to stop waste being created in the first place. We looked into how to recycle in our local area in Stevenage and we learnt that glass is infinitely recyclable meaning it can be reused again and again! We now know some handy tips to help reduce the amount of waste that we send to landfills and will be much more mindful of how to protect our planet.

  • Year 3 Recycling Assembly

    Year 3 had a lovely morning meeting Mrs Koziara.  She explained the 3Rs - Reduce - Reuse -Recycle!  The children got to sort objects into the correct recycling sections and realised that it is not always as simple as it seems.  We were shocked to find out that each person throws away 7 times their weight in rubbish each year!  We now know about some handy tips to help reduce the amount of waste that we send to a landfill and will be much more mindful of our waste in the future.

  • Year 4 Regeneration Visit

    On Wednesday, Year 4 walked to the town centre to learn all about the Stevenage Regeneration project taking place. We were guided by staff from the project who gave us a tour of some of the new areas (the playground and event area) as well as facts about the new bus station and historical clock tower. The mural detailling the history of Stevenage (aka the 'Strong Oak'!) was the most interesting part! The children showed curiosity and respect to their local community, well done!

  • ECO Schools Green Flag Award

    Congratulations!

    I’m delighted to confirm we have achieved our ECO Schools Green Flag Award! Our application was considered over the Summer Holidays and we received some glowing feedback – thank you to everyone who has been involved in the process. This is a whole school achievement and we are really grateful to every member of our School Community who helps to make Almond Hill a more environmental-friendly school. I would also like to say a special thank you to all of the past and present members of the ECO Committee for all their hard work and enthusiasm. There will be lots of new activities this year and keep an eye out for out Green Flag when it arrives.

    Once again, a massive thank you to all of you and remember, even ‘One Little Thing’ makes a difference.

  • ECO Trip - New Community Woodland at Fairlands Park

    On Friday 10th November work on the new community woodland was completed and officially named “Fairlane Wood”. Although all the past and present members were not able to join due to limited places, we were able to take some of the ECO Committee members to re-visit the trees that they planted and take part in various nature-themed activities. We learnt more about the trees in the existing woodland – did you know there is actually a moat in the woodland! We also collected some seeds and then were lucky enough to interact with some amazing birds of prey!   • Turn off the Lights Campaign

    ECO Committee have asked our Almond Hill community to help us reduce our energy by turning off the lights in our classrooms and main offices when they are not needed. Every room has a 'Pledge Card' and we are aiming for as many days as possible - so far it has been going well with lots of Teachers and adults in the offices saying they have already met their pledges of 3 days! Thank you everyone for helping and it fits perfectly with our ECO Code - 'One little thing helps...'

  • Clean Air Day - June 2023

    To support Clean Air Day, families were encouraged to walk, scoot, cycle or ‘park and walk’ to school. Children in our ECO Committee made signs for our drop off zone and posters made by children in 4O were put up around the school.

  • Big Litter Pick

    Published 26/03/23

    This week, children in our ECO Committee have been taking part in Keep Britain Tidy’s Big Litter Pick campaign. We have ‘pledged to pick’ and will work to clear the grounds of any litter to make it safer for the wildlife that lives here. Two children in our school have got ahead of the game and spent some of their weekend litter picking in their local community. Well done, Marley and Anniyah!

  • Trip to Fairlands
