Issue 17 - 24th January 2025

Dear Families,

Next week, the children representing Voices in Hertfordshire will attend their next meeting at Fairlands School. Additionally, Year 4 will welcome a visitor from North Herts Museum on Monday and some children will be participating in a badminton event on Wednesday —we look forward to hearing all about their experience!

We've had a fantastic start to the term with a range of sporting events, including Quidditch, football matches and sports hall athletics. As we move into February, our focus shifts to writing. Both Year 4 and Year 5 will participate in dedicated writing days during the first week, designed to inspire a love for storytelling. We’re also excited to have been invited to an awards evening celebrating writing—more details to come!

There are also opportunities for parents to get involved. Please check further down in our newsletter for Parent Forum dates, as well as information about our next SEND/Pastoral coffee morning.

Finally, a reminder for Year 6 parents: Miss Simmons will be hosting a SATs information meeting online on Monday, February 3rd at 6.00pm via Microsoft Teams. We encourage you to attend!

Parent Survey

We are really pleased to see that so many parents feel that we promote, inform and keep parents up to date on online safety matters.

The next Safer Internet Day is on Tuesday 11th February. Children will spend time on matters that are important to them with a particular emphasis on this year’s theme - ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online‘. https://saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/safer-internet-day-2025

Some parents may have heard of ‘smart phone free childhood’. This is an area the senior leadership team have been discussing in their latest meetings. There are some interesting ideas on the website below which you may want to consider looking at. We know there is a lot of pressure on parents to provide children with phones when they reach secondary school and smart phone free childhood make suggestions for alternatives to smart phones. However, I must add, we have not checked out the statistics so cannot guarantee its credibility.

When we asked how to improve online safety education further, there were few suggestions because it is felt we are doing a good job. However it was suggested there was a yearly webinar as challenges and threats are changing all the time. I completely agree with this but it is very expensive, budgets are tight and unfortunately, when we have offered in the past (such as last year) there has been very little take up from parents. We will however look at ways to share more information with you via our newsletter and website.

Uniform expectations and items from home

Whilst walking round the school this week, I noted there were many children were wearing jewellery -bangles/leather bracelets, hooped earrings etc. Please do not allow children to come to school wearing jewellery for health and safety reasons but also to ensure children do not lose much loved/valuable items in school.

Also we have seen an increase of children bringing in items from home such as cuddly toys – particularly in Year 3. This inevitably causes problems when they get lost, broken or taken by another child. Please do not allow your child to bring these in as they distract from learning and cause upset.

We will speak to your child directly about these issues and the class teacher may contact you if there continue to be problems. If a child repeatedly brings something into school that should not be here, we will store it in the school office for safe collection by an adult.

Ordering School Dinners

When ordering meals for your child(ren), please can parents do this with their child so they are able to choose food they will want to eat. All meals are made to order and as such, children cannot take their meal back and swop it for something else if they have something they do not like.

TTRockstars Battle

From 16th to 22nd January, Year 5 took part in a TTRockstars Battle of the Bands! The tournament was girls vs boys. Initially, the boys gained a massive lead over the girls and it seemed almost impossible that they would catch up. However, the girls fought hard and had an amazing comeback! The final scores were 1434 for the boys and 1433 for the girls. A massive well done to the children who took part- I'm sure they will enjoy their reward of an extra play time!

An extra special shout out to Barnaby, Jack and Nabhan who were the top contributors for the boy's team and to Pollie, Millie R and Scarlett who were the top contributors for the girl's team!
